I'll definitely contact the tech support to get that wiring diagram...

Truth is I'm not really into changing the pickups unless I find something that would really make me jumping around... But I've been using Dimarzio pickups for the past 2 years... and I haven't really experienced Seymour Duncan pickups.

I know nothing replaces a true single coil, but i prefer the simple split coils than the Parallel mambo jumbo thing, it's just based on past experience of mine.

A Duncan distortion in neck position sounds a bit odd to me as it's opposed to be a high output pup, and JB is pretty high too, What style are you playing with this combo?

My thoughts are actually going for medium output pickups with this guitar as I like the way it feels and I don't want to lose that crystal clear clean sound that you definitely lose with high output pickups, or most Dimarzio pickups... they have that midrange thing in them, without much presence, not very appealing to my ears.

I have a question.

What string gauge is the SUB1 supllied with? If I choose to use a fatter gauge would I have to do something to the nut as I've read that it might cause tunning issues...?

also, I noticed that when I pick hard on the bass strings it goes out of tune for a few moments and then returns to normal pitch.

Now, I've had this problem before with 9-42 gauge and I think that I solved it by using 3 springs where the 2 outter springs are not going straight but rather diagonal and the middle spring goes straight ahead.

Right now I don't have a middle spring, just 2 that go diagonal, I have the third in the bag to add if necessary. question is would that solve the problem, and would that affect the tension significantly?

If you go to a larger string, you will more than likely have to get the nut re-cut. It's a simple job, but not one I'd recommend you do (because you need the right files). Be careful putting the strings on if you don't get it re-cut, I have seen the low E break the nut. You will also probably have to add another spring. If it's setup correctly your tuning issues will disappear. Spend the money and have it set up right and you'll be glad you did

I've decided to keep using 9-42's... it will do the job. I don't need thicker strings right now...

I've added the 3rd spring and put them all parallel with each other... tension feels better now.

TonyEVH5150, I'd like to ask you:

I read in another thread about the mollex connectors... EMG passive pickups come with quick connectors... I'm surprised that Dimarzio and SD don't do that...

Speaking of which, what pickups did you have in mind for the SUB1? I'm curious... I'm actually more toward the medium output genre pickups. I've dealt with high output pickups such as Evolution, Steve's Special, Super3... but didn't experience enough with medium pups... I remember not liking the Paf Pro and the Fred but other than that I didn't experience others...

No need for high output pickup, there's enough gain and output from my pedals and amp...

I wonder if their medium output pickups have that character that you lose the cool presence when you play clean and get that Middiysh sound with lots of bass but not much High Treble but rather High Mid...

Any insights?

I've restrung mine with 10's. No major problem. But, I think mine has a compensated nut instead of a standard nut. I think these come stock with 9's.

As far as pickups, I tend to lean more towards higher output models. I'm a big fan of the Tone Zone/Air Norton combo, but I also want to try EMG's, Evo's, maybe even some SD's.

The molex connector on EB's makes it easier to swap out pickguards and pickups. I think it connects the output jack and grounds to the rest of the electronics on the pickguard (p-ups, pots)

If you want several setups that sounds like a cool idea...
But I think that I can settle with just one combo of pickups, I just gotta see which combo's that... I've been using Dimarzio pickups all those years and I tend to go for them just because I know them, no other particular reason, but I have no preference for which one to go for.

The name ToneZone has crossed my mind, or maybe Air Zone as it has lower output than TZ but the same curve and it's supposed to be a vintage version of TZ. as for Neck position... that's a real riddle, maybe a Breed...

One of the reasons I opened the other thread of dating my SUB1 is to know whether it has the compensated Nut or not, I've compared pictures of Nuts of other models to mine and it appeared is if it DOES have the Compensated Nut, not sure though... I guess that when I get an answer as to when the guitar was built I'll be able to tell whether it does or doesn't have that Nut.

I did do some reading yesterday of the FAQ on Ernieball's web site, and I found out that the SUBs are supllied with 9-42 RPS slinkys... not my favorite type,
I prefer the Rock n' Roll Slinkys... to be honest, 9-46 sounds better to my ears, I just don't want to touch the nut, I love everything as it is... better leave as it is than do something to regret for later...
