...i do have a peavey wolfgang which is nice but not as refined as the axis...

if you have the original wolfgang, you know how the new evh wolfgang feels like. it´s the same guitar with just some minor changes.
the biggest change was to downgrade the neckwood to "normal" maple instead of birdseye.
both guitars really feel very similar.
i´ve had a few peavey wlfg guitars (1st year quilt, std. black, us special and a std. hardstail which i still have) so i know how those type of guitar feels like. at musikmesse frankfurt 2009 i tried the new evh wlfg and there was no big difference between this guitar and the wlfgs i owned.
i do have two original ebmm evhs and love them! for me ebmm guitars a quality wise a step ahead.
i would go for an axis or a used EBMM EVH or try something new - try a morse Y2D.

Wow....there's a switch. Very different. Neck is a different carve, body is poplar with very different pickups. You can get it with a floyd. Very nice guitar, but very different.

I'll echo what I said in the other thread that while the Y2D is very different from the Axis, it is still a great and versatile guitar. It would definitely give you some different tonal options to compliment the Axis.

tone wise, different low-end feeling (tight but not so massiv as with basswood bodies), the mids are very "in your face"....the nutwide is the same as on the axis, the back contour is not offset shape and the "neck to fretboard" edge feels not so smooth, it´s more "edgy" i would say.
but overall it is an awesome guitar! my bandmates always say the Y2D is my best sounding guitar i have.....not more to say.

If you were to buy a used EBMM/EVH with worn frets for $2k, you could have it re-fretted with stainless steel frets, and replace the pot with a low-friction pot, and still spend less money than on the new EVH.
