Greetings All,

Just joined the forum today!! Just bought a MM Sub 1 guitar a couple of weeks ago and am blown away.

I am looking to replace the PUPs on the Sub 1 with either Duncans or Dimarzios. The guitar is poplar with a rosewood neck. As far as a neck humbucker, I'm looking for something with a fat sound and good vintage tone. The bridge pup I'm looking for is a nice warm tone but with a little edge w/good harmonics. Was thinking about a Duncan '59 neck and a Custom Custom for the bridge.

As far as Dimarzios I have no idea so any advice is appreciated..........

Hi, welcome aboard. (I'm leaving the 'addiction' quote alone for fear of being 'taken out'). :D

Well firstly congratulations on the SUB1, I hope u get many hours of enjoyment out of it.

The CC/59 combination sounds like a good bet for Duncans, I really like the CC in the bridge but find the 59 to be a bit limp personally.

As far as Dimarzios go I'd advice either a Tone Zone [bridge] Air Norton [neck] combo or another fave of mine that may match the poplar body a bit better and will definately give you the fat-but-vintagy sounds you describe is an Air Zone [bridge] and Air Classic [neck].

Check out the dimarzio website and the reviews database at harmony central for more feedback on those pickups. I'm sure others on the forum will give you their own opinions before long too.

Laters.

Congrats, fellow Sub1 Brotha!

I have always been fond of Dimarzios... My favorite combo is the Air Norton neck and Evoluution bridge. You could try a super distortion in the bridge. I feel the Air norton is the best neck pickup ever, so I will always advise that one. :) I'm actually planning on buying another pickguard and putting those pickups on it so it will be hot swappable. Personally, I like the pickups on the sub. :) They aren't the best, but I can get a very nice sound out of them... kinda of the ol, "if it ain't broke..." addage for me.

But DiMarzios would be killer in that guitar!

Hey thanks guys! I was leaning towards Dimarzios as well but never have used them (long time SD guy). But I agree that the stock PUPs are very good.....

Welcome to the addiction!! So, far, I think my fellow bros have you covered as what to go with. Seems like the Air Norton is a definite favorite. Tone Zone maybe the next......any that were stated sound good. Congrats on the Sub. BTW, it is tradition here........we need to see some pics!

Personally I like the Bill Lawrence 500L/XL (bridge) and 500R (neck) in a HH guitar. I swear by 'em- best pickups on the planet. Also much less expensive than Duncans or Dimarzios. Downside is you have to wait while they're being made for you. www.billlawrence.com.

For the bridge position, you can't go wrong with a Seymour Duncan JB. I would try a Pearly Gates in the neck for the vintage feel you want. I know it's a bridge pickup, but it will work.

I've always kind of wondered what a PRS Dragon pickup would sound like in a guitar other than a PRS.
