Cool jubs! be sure to get a book called ;I think; Etudes for String Bass by Simandl. It's a thin white book with red lettering on the front and has about 30 short etudes or solos for upright but it's a killer exercise for electric and can be done easily on electric as well. Also, Fingerboard Harmony by Gary Willis would be great to augment what ever your instructor gives you in school.

J.S. Bach for bass is a good book too. I learned alot of pieces out of it when I was going to school. I think Bunny Brunel wrote it. It came with a cd of him performing the pieces too. It was really helpful.

My favorite book (I haven't seen that many, to be honest) is The Improviser's Bass Method by Chuck Sher. Really gets down to the process of being a bass playing musician, rather than just playing the bass.
