I use brain picks from snarling dogs. Great grip from the get-go, you should check em out.

I don't want to go back to a big pick. The JIII has tightened up my playing surprisingly. I'm really happy with the black, will wash them and use them. Once they get funky I can hold onto them just fine. Will check out the Ultex when they get here. I still have to chuckle at the ad copy.

Same here, after playing jazzIII's for so long normal picks feel so bloody huge!

The sharp attack and the accuracy makes the pick so much more ideal for soloing. Sweep picking and pinch harmonics execute like a breeze. Once you go JazzIII you don't go back.

The only draw back is less range and cover for strumming, but you get used to it.

We need more jazzIII converts

Agrees. I only started using them a few months ago, based on the players of this forum who recommended them. Yeah, the old Fender med felt like a spade shaped Chinese fan, last time I tried it.

Yes on the strumming. I still have a little trouble holding on with up-stroking rhythms. Practice, practice, practice!

The EJ JIII, yet another one to try. Prolly should have ordered some of them today while I was at it.

I don't use Jazz IIIs for strumming. I use regular size picks for that, and only that. I have yet to find my favorite strumming pick, but right now I'm using Fender mediums.

I got some Ultex Jazz IIIs a couple of months ago, (really hard to source in the UK).

Unusual material (& colour!) but very 'grippy' compared to the reds.

Strumming is definitely different with a Jazz III. Not what it's made for. But you can manage OK. A Fender Medium is perfect for strumming, or a Hard one can be good too.

And there it is. I washed them in Dawn dish soap and hot water. They do have an oiliness when new, once washed well and dried, much better! Thanks for this one, Koogs.

No problem. I use the gorilla snot because I sweat to death when playing live and I like the added insurance to know the pick is not gonna slip out of my hand.

(the gorillas hate seeing me come around...;))

I like black JIII but they slip a bit during shows when my hands are sweaty. Ultex JIII stick much better but have a slightly different sound than the black ones. I think I like the sound of the black ones better but I use Ultex for the comfort sake

I feel the same way. I wish they'd make some sorta hybrid. You know, like a regular black one with the gripping part covered in the Ultex material. That'd be cool.

Here's a picture of the back of one of my new Eric Johnson Jazz IIIs....
you can see the text is a hell of a lot grippier than the normal j3s...

Hey Bruce, you know, not only we have similar guitars, we also use the same types of pics!!;)

I love my Jazz IIIs, and its the black one that I am talking. Its hard, grippy and using it has really improve my picking speed. I discovered the Jazz III when I purchased my AL, and my kind dealer generously threw in a dozen for me. I use them to pick and strum, no problem. The black, rough surfaced ones really provide comfortable grip for me, it makes me feel like I am holding on to something. The only downside to this pick is that bcos of the thickness, it may not create enough bite or treble since I am using 10s guage on all my Balls, so I may have to go back to some .73mm black tortex if I need to.

The smoother-surfaced red ones, dont do it for me however, as they are really smooth which may explain for slippage not only from the hand but also on the strings too. Are these the ones you talkin about?

I just picked up some Tortex Jazz picks today. I didn't know these existed, so I thought I'd give 'em a try. They're the same size as a Jazz III, but they come in an array of thicknesses, and the thickest they go is 1.14 mm, which is the size I got. They're pretty awesome. They have a little smoother of a sound and not as much bite as the black or Ultex ones, so I started using them for strumming.

Jimmy, great minds......;)

I'm actually fine with strumming, and my funk rhythms and rhythms in general are greatly improved with the black Jazz III. Where I have to concentrate a bit more to hold onto them is on accented upstrokes, like on SRV's 'pride and joy', for example. It did surprise me when I broke open a new pack to find the new ones are slippery. I washed them as Koogie suggested and that helped a lot. Now I'm waiting on the Ultex to try. The reds didn't do it for me; not a sharp enough string attack, and they're slipperier than the black, imo. The black, for me, have plenty of bite and attack, especially compared with the big ole floppy Fender mediums I was used to.

Ultex

The Ultex Jazz III's arrived, and I have to say I am both impressed and very disappointed. I think the material is pleasantly grippy, and I can understand why players might want to transition from the regular red or black to these - for that reason only. Any prior slipping problem will be gone. However, imo, they have nowhere near the clean definition of the black Jazz III. They sound scratchy or fuzzy (downright ratty) by comparison, note clarity is severely compromised. I'll keep a few in my cases, in case I get drunk and can't hold onto the blacks. And one more thing - could they possibly have made them any more easy to lose? with their neutral transparent color! Guess my kid gets another care package from dad, probably to distribute to his friends. Yuk.

You pretty much just summed up everything I've ever said about the Ultex IIIs. :D

Hey guys,

i picked up agreat tip from a professional guitar player at the London guitar show&knucklehead bash last weekend,mr andy james.what he puts on his pick to stop it slipping out of his hand is the tape you would use to wrap adressing o your arm or leg if you got a cut and were bleeding.very effective so he says and hes a pretty good shredder.
