Our usual practice room in my local village hall wasn't available due to building work last night so I had to scramble around and find somewhere else. 3 others I tried were all booked but the one in Lympsham (one of our neighbouring villages) was available so I took it. Never been inside it before and this is what greeted us when we set up:

This is not a church, it's their community hall. It was a lovely room and great to play in. They are clearly more posh over there than we are

I have a feeling we may book it again ;)

Well, as we're "outsiders" i.e. don't live in the village, it was supposed to be £40 for 4 hours, which is about $16/hour (that gets you the whole building including kitchen by the way, not just the hall) but since we only wanted it for about 3 hours the lady said "how much do you normally pay for yours?" so she charged me that - £18 or about $9/hour.

Nice sound and the low stage was great - could set up as if it was a real gig and then wander off it to hear what it all sounded like.

Sorry there's no pics of us playing, I'll try and remember to do that next time.

Wow! That IS a cool rehearsal space! I wish they were all like that.
Why don't you guys play opposite of each other? Isn't that more fun?

We usually do - we normally space ourselves out in a sort of circle but last night we thought we'd set up as if it was a gig and see how it looked and sounded. I think I'll take my (modest) LED light collection next time and have a play with that as well :)

Ah I see! That's a very good idea.
Well. Have fun over there next time! Can't be too hard :)

That is some practice room, and cheap as well. I would be frightened to walk on that floor for fear of damaging it let alone allowing a drummer anywhere near it!!!!

Did they hold a deposit?

All the village halls around us are a similar price - they don't get fully used except for stuff like dog training, carpet bowls and such like. I think having a rock band in there is quite exciting for them :D

Wooden floors are a problem and they asked us nicely to please not damage it. Hairy drummer is going to bring a mat in future and we're going to tie his sticks to his wrists so he can't drop them.

No, no deposit - there are some advantages to be being a grey-haired trustworthy-looking old git...

Barginkov, looks like you have all the tools, should anything need to be adjusted.

Umm, but you're in New York and I'm in a piddly little village in rural England - I bet you can get more gigs than I can ;)

Looks like you were having fun - I can hear a bassist so I know there's one there somewhere but I can't quite see him... what is that place anyway?

Man that looks awesome...we either rehearse in my shed (which leaks and has mushrooms growing out of the floor) or my drummers FILTHY house...being in there makes me feel physically sick. Looks ike you've got it pretty good though - well done man - looks like a friggin' church!

That's around the going rate over here for tiny, horrible sounding rehearsal rooms with mixing desks that often have 2 or 3 dead channels and mics that look like they've been used in Olympic hammer throwing competition.

Looks great! How did it sound in there?

Pretty good actually. The stage floor gave a great thump to the bass and the kick drum plus the high ceiling took care of any near echoes. We had a particularly good rehearsal and let rip a few times. I think having the ambience of a fine room helps you along, in the same way having a fine instrument to play makes a difference compared to fighting a crappy one.

at least they're organic

Drummers! They're all the same!

It was presumably part of the local manor next door and donated to the village - perhaps it was a chapel at some point. I may dig into it's history a bit more. The manor and this building are only Victorian so they're not that old.

On a separate but curiously related note, our village has a new vicar who moved in with his family only a few weeks ago. I stepped in at the last minute and did the sound for the village/church fete earlier this month (first time I've ever tried to be a DJ) and he came up to me and was all over asking questions about my little mixer desk and stuff. I told him I was a bass player not a DJ and it turns out he's a rhythm guitarist and just itching to get back playing in a band again :D He wanted to know if there was any chance to get in and jam with my new little band. As it happens we're looking for guitarists so he gets an audition next Tuesday - I reckon we'll have to stop swearing quite so much at practice though

Yet dangerously close to the drum kit and PA head...if there are mushrooms it means there is wetness. Actually, we replaced the carpets in there a few weeks ago and they were literally soaked. Not nice...

We don't even practice any more...we just invent new combinations of horiffic words!! But seriously...a DJ vicar? sounds like a badass combination.
