JP6, my one and only ball. Pearl Red Burst, no piezo, no inlay, no matching headstock. I'd tried a couple of JPs at a Sam Ash in Ontario, CA. I didn't like them, because there was something wrong with the set-ups on each of them.
I tried a Luke. Same thing.
Plus, the amps that they plugged me into were crap.
Still, I dug the sounds out of both EBMM models.
Then, I finally got to try my friend's black sparkle jp6. Not my thing, I thought. That guitar has never felt right to me. Then, I moved to MI for work. Went to a Guitar Center looking for the cheapest Mesa amp I could find. I had no intention of buying a guitar. They had a fully loaded MD JP6 and the Pearl Red Burst one I described. I tried them both through that F-30. Both were great. Quick mental calculus in my mind: okay, I don't think I'm really going to use the piezo for anything. The MD paint job, inlay, and matching headstock are just cosmetic things. What I was really after is that great JP/Mesa crunch, and the Pearl Red Burst guitar did it just fine. Guitar Center were doing one of their "don't pay for more than a year" kinds of deals. I couldn't resist. I went home $xxxx poorer, but the love of both instruments is priceless. I would take the same deal again. The only thing I would change: If I could have gotten approved for more credit, I would have gone for the fully loaded JP. Or, maybe, I would have put the difference on another card.
I think I got lucky that the set-up was good on that PRB guitar. It was probably newly out of the box and not defiled by other people playing the guitar. Now, I trust EBMM enough that I'm probably going to order all my follow-up JPs sight unseen. Of course, I'm only going to order through a knowledgeable dealer who loves these instruments like Pete. I won't deal with a Guitar Center or something like that. I'll probably order a Luke without trying another one. I'll have to try a Morse or a Y2D first, but I might just go ahead and order those sight-unseen too. I'd love to try a Silo too.
I'd love a Y2D hardtail, premium quilt top, Purple Sunset. Not sure about matching headstock or the natural one. The Luke will probably be Carbon Blue. JPs to get: JP7 (at least one, no idea on the color, maybe an LE color), fully loaded one (maybe MD, maybe an LE color, maybe Graphite Pearl or Egyptian Smoke). Then, that's probably it. Who knows? Maybe a Silo, maybe and AL.
