A phaser isn't really going to boost your volume...OD pedals are good...just turn the gain down and the level up. If you want to go nice on a clean boost get a Z Vex Super HardOn...
many pedals have an output volume that can boost volume. My 535 wah pedal even has a 20 db boost switch. The EVH statement was not mine but Eddies.

I use a keeley modded boss tr-2 tremolo pedal with the depth control down and the volume (installed by keeley) up. I also use (depending on which pedalboard I'm using) the duncan pickup booster. it's quiet enough and works well.

I use my lead channel to boost, 3 channel head but EQ pedals are popular on front of the amp, you can boost the volume and the mids for a searing solo -

I guess I'm old school. When I sound check, I turn the amp up to lead guitar level, then I back off the volume knob on the guitar to rhythm level. Time to solo, volume knob goes up to 10. When I'm done, turn back down.

I've read that, but in theory (and after trying) it doesn't totally work, not to mention you're going to get the inherent color of which ever effect you use, and especially with the world of dedicated overdrives/boosts that are available advising a phaser which is a modulation effect is a little improper. EVH used something else for a boost but it's not proper to post about it on the forum...

+1.

But I've also got a 2 channel amp and a tubescreamer if I need that extra push "over the cliff"

yeah you're right it was improper of me to post that, after all you did do a test and it didn't work for you. I don't use that method myself either, but I was just throwing something else out there for the guy to think about. Maybe next time a question is asked we can all run our posts by you for clearance? Care to share with us the something else that he used for a boost?

What do you think of EQ pedals as boosters? I'd have them boost me up a little and gets the mids somewhat bigger? What do you think?

I use a Keely Mod TS-808 as a general overdrive for rythm, then for leads kick in the Analogman Mod TS-9 for leads. The TS-9 boosts the midrange, the volume, and sustain. The I run into a Boss DD-3 with the dry to one amp and the wet to another. I put a Morley Flanger on the wet side last in the chain.

All of my stuff is guitar solos so I boost from the moment I turn my amp on. Sometimes it's good to not have to worry about anyone else.

I was no help

Whack up my vol on the guitar and stomp on a fuzz. Drive about 9o'clock, level about 3 o'clock. And its time for rock o'clock!

It's the only way i know!!!
