How do you all carry a tune when your guitar player takes a solo? I'm talking single guitar, bass and drums. I'm finding that the sound seems to thin our quite a bit when my guitar player takes leads. I'm trying to play a bit louder and more full during the leads, but it doesn't seem to help.

Should I be sustaining notes as much as possible so that there's no dead air?

Help!!!

Play whatever serves the purpose, and don't forget that 'dead-air' is not necessarily a bad thing. It allows the song to breathe.

Good question, sometimes when the ass appears to fall from the song it's up to the drummer and bassist to carry it. I'd recommend working together with the drummer. maybe a change in volume as well? Those dang guitar players

Also, check out some great trios, one of the best examples in recent history, in a Blusey context, is the John Mayer Trio. I'm tellin' ya, if there's one guy to study it's Pino Palladino! Los Lonely Boys are a good example too....Audioslave..... and that little old band called Cream:D

I agree with that, I also view bands like the Who as being a three piece plus a singer. Man that Entwhistle...

In most cases, I play the same thing. Sometimes, if it's rock, I'll kick in the octave and/or add some distortion.

I thought the early stuff that Grand Funk put out didn't ever seem too thin either.

(The reason I said "early stuff" is because a lot of their later tunes included a keyboard.)

I try to fill in the holes by playing some fives and octaves in between the beats, etc; while trying not to be so busy I cover up the solo.

Agreed, Larry!

At least the guitarist in my rock band holds back quite a bit. Nice guy, too. There is no covering up a solo in my blues band, though. Might as well ask a brick wall to kindly move itself out of the way. Still fun, though!
