I would like to send him an email. Any idea how to do it? There is no link on the dream theater website. And no, it is not hate mail. More a question about the finished necks on the Bfr and the JPX, and why did he go away from the unfinished Neck. I would buy a JPX now, but I am finding that due to the sticky hands that I have, I have problems enjoying the the BFR.

Did he demo the mahogany neck unfinished?

Is mahogany too porous to be unfinished?

Will sanding the neck finish off, take away from the tightness of the guitar?

I love the birdseye maple necks on my other 2 JP's, But i am struggling With the neck finish on the BFR.

Any help would be great.

I do not think there is anyway to directly contact him. on the JP forums for a while he would respond to questions posted, but he does it so rarely you probably would not get an answer from him.

The most probable answer is that he found that he liked the finished necks more than the unfinished, thus the BFR and JPX have them but the original JP does not. Your theory on Mahogany being more sensitive to hand oils and grime may hold true, i do not know though because i am not a wood expert.

I can guarantee that there's no way you'll be able to email him and ask him a question. There used to be an "Ask JP" section on the JP forum, but its been locked down for quite some time now.

Regarding the necks, I'm sure JP just wanted a change. Do you own a BFR? I've owned about 5 and never found the necks to be sticky at all.

Taking the finish off the neck shouldn't change the tightness of the guitar at all since most of that comes from the body woods, pickups, etc. but as far as I know, Mahogany has to have a finish on it because it is very porous.

You'd have better luck on the JP forum although be careful if you ever want to sell a guitar on there you get crazy stalkers who stalk you because you have the audacity to sell on a JP guitar...

I remember seeing a video a few years ago, maybe the "5 Years in a Livetime" where he is in the recording studio and someone is spraying Finger Ease on the fretboard while he's using an ebow. He might be spraying the neck with that to give him the desired playability he likes.

These are better questions for EBMM's luthier's.

If you prefer the neck unfinished I'm sure the tonal difference will probably be negligible and you could probably get your local luthier to do it. Mahohany is a open-grained wood and needs a grain filler but I sure the luthier could take it down to a satin finish. Keep in mind you'd be voiding whatever warranty you have.

Out of curiosity.
Is the JP BFR finished neck similar to the finished neck on my Sub1?

im confident big poppa would have answers to those questions. you probably dont need to ask petrucci
dont forget taht petrucci isnt actually a guitar tech, he's a guitar player, this is pure speculation but a lot of the "decisions" made for JP models have probably been of the vain of the ernie ball team presenting him with a prototype and simply asking him what he liked and didn't like about it.
players like petrucci don't need to know the technical reasons behind certain specifications, they just need to meet the team half way and tell em what he does and doesn't like

I really could not tell you how to get in touch with JP as he must have thousands of fans that would like to talk shop with him. Then again Sterling could probably answer your question as he is friends with him and the man who makes his guitars. If you are having that much trouble with the finish on your neck-(have you ever tried powder as I have seen Jeff Beck pour it on his hands right on stage) As far as stripping the neck I would personally never do a mod that could not be reversed on such a high end guitar. You have two Petruccis that you are happy with, have you sat down and checked out something totally different like a Y2D, HH AL, Axis or Luke as they all have unfinished necks and maybe something new in the stable will bring some new music.

Maybe you could try to find a used JP 6 BFR with the BFR rosewood option. That's the only way to get an unfinished neck on a JP BFR.There are a few out there so perhaps you can score one of these!

I suspect walleye's answer is pretty close to the mark.

BP has always said the JP models are a collaboration, but the EBMM design team keeps working on prototypes and new ideas and sending them out to artists to evaluate. (There have been many JP prototypes that never saw the light of day - neck through body, etc.) What they like often sticks in the artist models.

If I recall ... the mahog necks need to be finished. I think it is too porous. Could probably dig that one up in a search.

If you really, really, really wanted a JP BFR or JPX with an unfinished neck....and had the funds.....you could buy the BFR of your choice and then buy either a maple neck JP or Rosewood neck JP and swap necks. You could then sell the one that you'd make from the BFR neck and non-BFR body. Hey....call it a Custom made, one of a kind JP.

I was thinking if the necks were interchangable. That's what I'd do if I had the money to buy both. I like unfinished necks, but I prefer the woods and the shape of the BFRs.
