i'm in the market for a 2nd bass and i want to go for a bolt on (my current bass is a carvin lb70p which is a neck through).

i just want honest opinions of how this bass compares to other basses of similar caliber. i'm planning on playing like...funk ROCK (emphasis on rock), so i believe it to be the obvious choice.

the only other choice i had is the flea bass by modulus, and i don't know how it compares to the stingray. i've heard people say that it has more oomph than the stingray, but can't that be easily changed by a change of pickups and preamp?

so please...honest opinons. heh.

thanks

IMO the stingray and sterling are great for rock. I play mostly punk and metal (they counts as rock right?) and I highly recommend 'em. (the link in my signature leads to MP3's of my last band's demo - all songs recorded with a sterling)

i really think its a tossup between the 2 but maybe id give the sterling a slight edge b/c of the cool pickup selector. i say go to a guitar center and A vs B the two, but be careful cuz u may end up buying both :)

i have had maybe basses IMHO EB is the bomb. id take em over a P or Jazz bass any day.

The reason that the Stingray is such a fat bass despite being a mere bolt on is threefold - the humbucking pickup, active preamp and the massive bridge. A Jazz bass sounds quite anaemic in comparison, although a Precision with a hotter replacement pickup and a Badass bridge is also a good choice for funk rock (eg. check out the bass on the Cake CD "Fashion Nugget"). The only basses in my herd that sound fatter than my Stingrays are my long scale set neck Les Paul (a 14lb monster with dual humbuckers and an active preamp) and my Bongo (dual humbuckers, 18 volt preamp). My Thunderbirds are on a par with my Stingrays, but they are neck through instruments with dual humbuckers.

So, in short, a Stingray can more than hold it's own in a rock environment against set neck or neck through basses.

Amen! My MIA active Deluxe Fender 5 doesn't have the balls that my SR5 has...

Passive Fender style basses are not going to have anyway near the output of any EB but you can get a nice sound with them. Just try a number of basses and include a Stingray in your choices.

Better watch out.....the Music Man bug will bite hard enough to make that Carvin take a back seat! ;) They managed to sideline my Ken Smith BT5G neckthru which I thought would always be my number 1.

Ray or Bongo IMO. :D

That was the part of the original question that I couldn't fathom. Over here, Carvin are viewed as cheap run of the mill basses, so I didn't understand why he'd be considering a MM as a backup instrument to a Carvin. Most people I know would buy a Stingray or Bongo and then consign the Carvin to firewood duty.

honestly, for the people who haven't tried carvins, please don't say anything. they are EXCELLENT basses. i find the carvin more versatile than the stingray, but i really want a stingray. just because they're sold direct from the store, it doesn't mean they're ****ty instruments.

i've tried ken smith basses and i disliked them. i really didn't know how good carvin was until i tried a lot of different basses.

but the stingray impressed me when i played with it, and plus...it's flea's old bass.

the bongo is a fugly bass. to each his own, but i still think it's fugly.

I'm curious: Have you tried a Bongo?

No disrespect to the Carvins, Bro - I've just seen a lot of people give up other basses, good and not-so-good, cheap and not-so-cheap, in favor of a Ray or a Bongo.

BTW welcome to the forum! :D

i just said bongos were ugly. i never said they played crappily or anything. i would never say that because i've never touched one.

i've tried the stingray and i can't see myself giving up the carvin or anything. i really don't want to say it's superior or anything because i don't actually own one, but i'd say they're on par in terms of sound quality and playability.

thanks for the welcome :)
hope to spend more time here once i buy one.

oh yeah.
so no one knows how it compares to the modulus flea bass?

Stingray and sterling are great for rock and funk and funk rock. I play in a funk rock band and my sterling works perfectly.

I played a Modulus Flea bass before at the local GC here. It really didn't cut it for me. Of course, I couldn't hear a thing with the loud music they were playing and the ear-piercing noise one obnoxious guy was twanging out of his guitar.

I ordered a Carvin several years ago. I sent it back three times because after a couple of days at my house the neck would backbow with negative relief. After the third time I told them to keep it.

quit being an asshole, mark. i'm asking a couple of questions and you're being a pain in the ass.

i never really experienced problem with relief because i live in socal. i guess it could be a problem. why? does it not happen in stingrays? any wood neck is bound to do it to some degree, right? don't know much about it.
Careful there hoonie. These mods know how to use the ban button! Us fellers don't talk that way 'round here.

Sure its possible, but I suspect that the Carvin I got just had a bad/warped neck. I'm sure they are not all this way. I've played a few other Carvins over the years, but they just did not do it for me. You will have to decide for yourself if they are for you. As for EB quality, I don't think you will find another production bass with the same consistency of quality.

Really? Did you read my answers to your questions? Your bridge question has been done to death. You've received plenty of good advice on how a Stingray compares to other bolt on basses as well as set neck and neck thru models. If you need one of us to hold your hand when you go to the store to buy a Stingray, just say so.

This is a very civil/adult forum, and name calling has no place here. If you are going to call someone an A$$hole, you have to at least use a smiley face. Seriously, I think Mark was just answering your question regarding how MM basses compare to Carvins, for example.

Besides, I think that was actually a compliment to Flea -- errr, wasn't it Mark? ;)
