Picking up this old thread. Who knows who airport security has worsened since '09?
Since I too am inclined NOT to check but to carry on my Axis Super Sport, my question is will an ATA flight case fit in your average overheads? In other words, in case the airline insists that I DO have to check it, I would want to pack it in an ATA case insist of the regular hardshell. But since I would be trying to carry it on anyways, would it be too difficult to fit in the overhead or elsewhere on board?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

On a related note, where people worry about temperature in the baggage hold. My brother is an airline pilot and I asked him about that. The temperature change is actually quite slow as baggage holds on commercial airliners, while often not directly heated are insulated and indirectly heated by air from the cabin. From what I've read elsewhere, the holds don't go below freezing point and are usually around 10°C. A guitar in a flight case is further insulated and the temperature change would be slower again.
Having worked in a warehouse for a large guitar store, I can assure you all that guitar deliveries in the middle of winter will experience much faster and more extreme changes in temperature just going from distributors depot to delivery truck to depot or store again, with no damage to the guitars. I always gave them a minimum of three hours, if not overnight, to adjust to room temperature again before unpacking, just to be safe and avoid finish cracking.

There's no way you'd be able to carry a regular case on a flight, let alone a much heavier, larger ATA case.
The whole point of an ATA flight case is so you can check your guitar and be confident it won't get damaged during handling. If you want to carry it on, bring a small gig bag and cross your fingers.
