How JP Really Has Inadervtantly Influenced My Setup!

I'm back into my pedal minimalism mood, changed my amp setup, having a big pedal firesale, etc. I was thinking about my current setup and how it's uncannily similar to the setup JP used at the Dubaldo clinic earlier this year. I remember being blown away at how great his tone was with just a single amp, delay pedal in the loop, wah and his guitar. And of course, his unbelievable skills/chops. Well, I'm no Pet by any stretch of the imagination and don't sound like him or have a 1/32 of his abilities but I just realized I'm at the point of just a wah, delay, my new Boogie F-50 setup and my JP6 (or my TCM Taurus) and I'm loving the simplicity of it all. It's rather refreshing. I know his live setup and recording setup are far from this simple but seeing a guy of his calibre prove once again that guitar essentially straight into amp is all you really need is awesome.

I've been kind of thinking along the same lines for the past 10 - 15 years. Just a wah sometimes. Now, I've added a Maxon SD9 to get some of those in-between/lower gain sounds. It adds a nice dimension, in essence, doubling the number of sounds I have at the push of a footswitch.

Same thing has happened to me...I recently added a Mesa Boogie Lonestar Classic to my Stiletto Ace and now I only have a wah and an amp splitter on my pedal board, and a delay and chorus in the Lonestar's loop.

I've just cleared out a host of pedals and I've got much less noise than I used to have but seem to have loads more tone.

Less is definitely more as far as I'm concerned.

After my initial early '90's guitar hero phase, I pretty much turned my back on effects. For the last many years my guitars have beenbone dry, when playing live or practicing it's just guitar->cable->head->cab. When recording, I do add a bit of effects: compression for cleans and delay for solos.

I don't really think that my setup is in any way "Petrucci" - given his love of massive setups - but i do think it is in line with what a lot of players go through: at first it's effects overkill (in my case enough effects to cover my lacking skills) and then gradually we return to the basics - a good guitar, a good amp and a good cab.

Something to be said for purism, Josh. I don't miss my pedals, nor the jungle of cables, whatsoever. Imo, you get to hear more of your guitar and amp without them.

JP has influenced me. No question about it. I've got an EBMM JP with a 2nd one on order. I also have a Mesa Boogie Road King II. I haven't sold my pedals off yet but the thought has occured to me. I keep thinking it'd be so much simpler to have a G-Major. There are some things I can't replace with a rack though. Like my Whammy and a wah. Even my volume pedal. So I end up keeping them.

You could always consider the G-force floor based FX processor - you could still keep your other FX and add them in...plus you wouldn't need a rack.

JP said before that he only used alot of effects live. But keep to the minimum when recording.

I go: EBMM JP ---> Wah ---> Maxon OD808 ---> 2ch Recto, with a G-Major in the loop.

I think that's pretty simplistic, and I love it.
