...I know my way around movable do solfege but no one I know, except for my tone deaf wife, thinks I can sing. I'm actually ok at blending and harmonies and doing the choir thing, but I wouldn't presume to think about singing lead.

so i guess the short answer is "sorta":D

I think my singing is why we never got out of the basement....

We would take turns singing and also do some backround stuff. Definately keeps you on your toes.

Some examples.....

Me

I front a couple of the bands I play in, and I really love to sing in late night jams at our warehouse, but my playing suffers when I do. (Nobody knows the words to a lot of the songs I force others to play except me anyway.) On reggae and ska tunes, I do just fine, but that's due to lots of practice, (and I STILL mess those up sometimes.) In an original alt-country band I am in, singing backup makes me lose the feel, but that's due to LACK of practice. In my Morphine tribute band, I have no trouble at all, but I'm playing slide bass with a pick, so it's more like playing rhythm guitar than bass. If you spend some time playing bass lines to a metronome and practicing your vocals, you will do fine. Any amount of time I spend doing this improves my performances a LOT!
(Well, of course...practicing helps! Imagine that!!)

Can't sing but wish I could - I write stuff and would really like to sing my own songs.

Similar problem here... :(

Like Jack, I fall to pieces if I try to talk to someone when I'm playing.

Guilty as charged!! And I always thought that's a unique sort of deficiency I have ;)

I can ("am able" / "am allowed to") sing some background vocals, but nothing complex or with lots of text. It's funny, with longer vocal lines if I get the bass line right, I start to mix up the lyrics and vice versa. If the rhythm of the bass line and vocal are very different, I can't do it at all, or with enough practising I get to the point where both rhythmical lines start to "interlock" and feel natural.

However, I'd give a couple of arms, several legs and a truckload of vocal cords if I could be [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mO9UbWMycM&mode=related&search="]YouTube - Lydia on bass 4[/nomedia]... or at least marry her ;)
