I use rubbing alcohol to clean the board and then some "Skydd" oil from IKEA (Sparingly) whilst the strings are boiling in the pot !!.... and yes it works for Ernie Ball slinkys and DÁddario´s, Dont know about other types with cloth binding ?? :p

I was eager to try this out, but alcohol did not help.... this funk is deep in the wood. I will try 2 types of fb cleaning solutions over the weekend that I can borrow from friends, will see what that does. if all else fails, sanding it is.

Why not try the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser before sanding? Those things are amazing.

How exactly do you boil them? How long? Are the strings actually sitting on the bottom of the pot while it is on the gas stove?

True. If you may end up sanding anyway, try the Magic Eraser first.

I did some research and I learned that people are supposed to use it with very light pressure when using on wood, or you may leave a hazy area.

I boil the water with a small amount of Fairy liquid and a tablespoon of vinegar then drop the coiled strings in a let them simmer for about 10 minutes then remove strings whilst hot and they will dry almost immediately... I play at least 10 hrs every week with 2 bands and i haven't bought any "Slinkys" for 2 years and counting (Sorry Big Poppa ):eek:

I have a set of Cobalts that have been on the bass for two years now. Amazingly, they have still retained their intonation at the high octaves. I might try your trick on them. Anymore details or hints?

Thanks,

I tried it today... it seems to work. I'll find out for sure when I play tomorrow morning.

Thanks,
