Hi folks
Im gonna be building my own guitar, but here is the thing I cant quite get right

how to finish it

Im wanting it to be more like a bass guitar in the respect that the flam maple has no real finish, just the wood

sorta like the neck finishes on a Jp for example

can this be done ie. could the wood/body become damaged without a thick finish coat

I know bass guitars like w@rwick seem to just have an oil/wax based finish

thanks
Euan

yeah I have been doing some searching on the net (mainly bass guitars as they are finished in this way more than guitars are for some reason)

anbd going by the w@rwick website on thier colors and finishes page they have a section named Natural oil finishes

I think this is the way Im gonna do it

anybody know what type of oil is used

I refinished this guitar with tung-oil. It is very easy to apply and looks very nice.

hey thanks norrin

I was sure it was tung oil

holy cheet!!! hope i didn't pressure you into this post!!!

if you really want the flame to pop, you gotta sponge coat it in black first, then sand it down till there is hardly any black left, then do the same again. repeat till you're satisfied with the depth of flame then coat it tung oil or similar.

I have finished a body in Tru oil and then wax - same as used on the necks - it came out VERY nice.
Just apply it with some paper towel wipe off excess straight away -apply a second/third etc coats in the same way and top off with some wax. No spraying, just remember - preparation is everything. Fail to prepare = prepare to fail, ya know what I'm saying!! ;)

I used the Birchwood Casey Tru oil and GuN stock wax on a lovely figured Strat body that a friend of mine bought.
He loves it. Handwound pickups, and some electronic jiggery pockery on the volume & tone knobs - not "my bag" but again, he loves it.

Been told today that I have to work in Lothians and East Kilbride in October !!!!
