Vai uses a Kelely modded "seeing-eye" DS-1. A completely different animal tone-wise from the stock DS-1.

If you really want to get close to his tone, you need the evolutions, rosewood fingerboard and basswood body, from a materials perspective. The rest, as others have told you, is in your hands. Although, surprisingly, the closest I ever came was with a white Jem through a 5150. Go figure.

Yep, I've played a Keely modded DS-1 and a regular DS-1 and the Keely is the one I want to steal from my buddy's pedalboard

Listen to my cover version that I recorded about 4 or 5 years ago.

Recorded with a Jem7DBK and POD 2.0 direct into computer.

Some notes goes sharp, but was funny to record.

Not exactly like original recording, but some parts are very close.

I think exact like SteveB said: delay between 300 and 500 ms, dual rectified tremoverb setting or other high gain and some reverb.

Use "circular vibrato" always, and you can achieve more sustain time from the notes.
Holy C^*$, nice...I am impressed. How long did that take you to learn? How did you obtain the backing tracks?

Hi guys, this is a good track to exercise.

I got the backing track from a friend at jemsite and got a lot of them from Vai, Clapton, Satriani, Hendrix, Paul Gilbert and other shredders.

Raz, I was playing this track since I've bought this CD, in 1994, so, its a lot of time.
Started playing nothing more than intro, and slice it in parts to achieve each one individually.

I belive that I can't play like that anymore without some days of training.
I was playing that song, Blue Powder and Sisters and Flying In a Blue Dream and Summer Song (Satriani), everyday, and now I dont have much time to do it more.

Will post the patch for POD 2.0.

I will download Soundiver to find the patch, cuz I got about 200 patches at home.
I sold my POD 2.0 (I'm using XT Live) and patches from 2.0 don't work good using Tone Port.

Check this song too, it's really cool.
