How to Prevent Belt Buckle from Scratching Bass

I've got a brand new SR5 that I want to keep in perfect condition. It's my new baby, and I'm protecting it at all costs. (So far, I haven't even taken the protective film off of the pick guard. ) The last thing I want is for my belt buckle to scratch the back of the bass.

Is anyone out there as crazy about protecting their new baby as I am? Any ideas on how to prevent the belt buckle from scratching the bass? (I'm getting tired of walking around without a belt when I play. ) Any other ideas on preserving the bass?

If Im wearing a belt and a tucked in shirt for a gig, I always move my belt so the buckle is at my side instead of the front.

had a guitar player in an old band that was worried about the same thing. he'd tie a sweater or a jacket around his waist such that the "knot" thingy actually prevented the guitar from getting close enough to touch the buckle ... or you could untuck your shirt

I know you can but pads that cover the back I saw them in an ad in the latest bassplayer mag.
Can't recall what exactly they are called

Either move your buckle to the side or tape up your buckle...masking tape goes on quickly and is easy to remove. Wraping cloth around your buckle also works but looks really odd. My studded belt tore up the back of my "starter" bass so i've become an expert at protecting my sterling.

Its not just the buckle. I used to wear jeans when I played, and the top button and side rivits will shred a bass over time too. Just play naked, that would fix the problem...

It's like a car. If you want to keep it pristine, park it in the garage and cover it up so that nothing can get near it. But if you are going to use it, somethings going to happen to it. Your cars were meant to drive and your basses were meant to play. Once you buy it, it's not new anymore, it's used. So use it and enjoy it instead of obsessing over it. The main thing to remember is that how it sounds is MUCH more important than how it looks.

and i tuck it out a little so my belt buckle wouldnt be exposed to the bass

i dropped a guitar on purpose once (not from too high though) just to get past the damn "first scratch" thing. sounds like a really dumb thing to do (i know)... but better me than my girlfriend or something ... id be soooo mad if someone else did it, but i can excuse myself.

This is one of those things i just dont care about anymore cuz its bound to happen ... its a bass not a Spiderman #1. nicks etc just add character IMHO

They do make belts that use velco to fasten. A police or uniform supply store will carry such an item.

Some are a bit pricey, they come in all price ranges and different materials. If you look, you will find one that will fit your needs. I plan on getting one, I have the same worries. Since I am getting my bongo soon (oh, pleeeeeessssee!!!) I am already thinking of this.
