I had this american deluxe j bass I bought new in 97 and sold last year. The back of it was flawless when I sold it. I simply just don't like wearing a belt or rarely do I tuck my shirt in and especially not when I play. Plus I always wear tee shirts that go past my waste line and cover all the rivets and junk on blue jeans. Do that and you should be fine as far as belt buckle rash. Its those pesky headstock dings you should worry about. :D

of course flea had it right, just play in yer undies...

also, i've never once turned by belt to the side, ro taped my buckle or anything like that, and suprise! no scratches to be found on any instrument I own.

not that i'm overly cautious, i just never find myself scratching it.

I've got a brand new SR5 that I want to keep in perfect condition. It's my new baby, and I'm protecting it at all costs. (So far, I haven't even taken the protective film off of the pick guard. :) ) The last thing I want is for my belt buckle to scratch the back of the bass.

Is anyone out there as crazy about protecting their new baby as I am? Any ideas on how to prevent the belt buckle from scratching the bass? (I'm getting tired of walking around without a belt when I play. ) Any other ideas on preserving the bass?

Thanks,

Its just gonna happen. As much as I love the pumpkin 'ray, I get crazy when I play live and its gonna take a bit of abuse. Thats why sparkly blue never gets played live, I want it to stay perfect so its limited to home and studio use.

The day my SR 5 gets scratched I am going to beat the hell outta whomever done it even if it is myself. I am going to play it every day too. Wonder who gets the first beating?

This is a FUNNY thread--
But, hey, I feel 'ya--Nice bass, beautiful finish, who wants a scratch??

But if you use your bass in the real world, it will probably happen even if you're as careful as can be---

My suggestion????

Don't wear a belt------

I always play with my shirt untucked, but my bass still gets rash from the buttons on the shirts I like to wear. The only thing I can think to sd is wear a t-shirt all the time and no belt.

I knew a bassist who carried a small towel in his case. He would fold the towel and tuck it in over the top of his belt buckle before each set. That way he still looked professional on break. The towel is easy to remove and re-tuck before each set. :p
