Or if you use a polishing cloth to wipe your bass down with on stage, keep it over your belt. Won't get lost!

That is actually a better idea to use the polish cloth. A towel might leave minute scratch swirls after so many repitions of rubbing against the back of the bass. You could also use a cloth baby diaper (unused of course
). It is soft, won't scratch and after all, your Bass is your baby!!!!!!

Two products come to mind that might not be in production anymore; one of which I still use.
Back in '99 or so there was a product called a "Scratch Pad" that was simply one of those "Colorforms" type of clingy plastic deals that adhere to smooth polished surfaces. They had them in various patterns, including clear transparent plastic, one of which I still use on my SR 5. Works great against scratches, although since it's very thin, you can still dent the instrument through it by pushing on a buckle or what not.
The other thing is the "AxeSak" (sp?), an item guitarist Jennifer Batten used to pimp in the mags (in the '90s). It was a semi-fitted piece of stretchy material (lined Spandex?) that went all around the back of your instrument, around the horns and lower bouts, that stayed on and kept a bit of material between you and it. Don't know what happened to 'em or how good they were though.
Somebody here ought to have experienced one or both of these. C'mon, swallow your pride and admit it!

Back in the mid to late 60's Fender made an accessory called the "bodyguard", a plastic piece in clear, red, or black that form-fit around the back and sides of their guitars and basses, just for this purpose!
Considering what a mint Strat or P-Bass brings today, makes sense now!
I like the finish on my basses to stay pristine, but I have to go with Jack on this---
If it's gonna be a major issue, you could probably use a good.....distraction!

I'd like to thank all of you for bringing up the great ideas to protect my "new baby".
For those of you who ridiculed my obsession, I can understand your position, since I've had a similar attitude in the past. Now, however, after 35 years of playing, my 1960's Les Paul and my early 1970's Stratocaster look pretty beat up. I really wish I would have taken better care of them. Check out the prices for a 1960's Les Paul in good shape, if you can even find one.

In the old days some Gretschs came with big round leather pads that snapped on the back of the guitar.....I have some old basses that show a lot of rash on the back.Sometimes the inevitable is inevitable. If you use them they will eventually show some wear.

You have several options here Einstoned:
1/ Put your pants on inside out.

Thank you for that beautiful display of objectivity, politeness, and all round good nature to the issue at hand
.Of course it is inevitable that if you use the bass it WILL be scratched. I do approve of trying your best to minimize the possibilities. I have waited a long time and spent hard earned money to play a quality instrument like my ray5; besides, a scratched guitar will not hold its $ value compared to a non-scratched guitar.
Does anyone care about the re-sale value of an instrument? Personally I don't forsee me ever getting rid of my new Ray5, but hey - things change down the road and you can't just un-scratch a scratch.
I like the answer that was given about growing a gut and letting the bass lay on your stomach. Been there done that....fortunate enough to have sized back down though
