is it time to visit the bass tech?
to briefly explain - got this bass shipped body and neck separate from Chazmusicman (PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT CHARLIE'S FAULT - HE DID A GREAT JOB OF SHIPPING IT TO ME SAFELY). Not being confident to put it together, i got some local guitar shop guy to screw the neck and body together. i initially thought he did a good job - UNTIL NOW!

look at that huge gap! how can i fix it? is this really bad for the bass!!!??? :(:(

PLEASE GIVE ME GOOD NEWS..!!! help!!!

Looks to me that the "guitar shop guy" has ****house attention to detail. He's tightened up the neck screws without checking if the neck is aligned in the pocket first. Detune the strings, loosen the screws, give the neck a jiggle until she lines up, and retighten. Before you do, print out a photo of the f-up to show to the "guitar shop guy" when you go to the store to ask for your money back on his setup job.

Very easy to do if you haven't been drinking all day. Just remember to really detune your strings until they are very floppy & loose & use the right size screwdriver--don't use a knife or your incisors. The neck might even end up popping into alignment during the unscrewing process.

One other thought--it's possible, although unlikely, that the "repairguy" might have tried shimming the neck an the shim was dislodged when he was screwing the neck back on--very unlikely though that he did so.

I learned everything I've ever known about bass setups by taking my 1st EBMM SR4 apart. I've never harmed it, hurt it, or done anything to injure it...other than ding up the headstock and lovingly wear down the frets over ten years.

If your guitar "tech" (i.e. college dropout who lives in his gramma's basement) doesn't have enough sense to properly align 4 neck bolts and turn them, then I think you may well be more qualified than him to do this job.

After all, you can type and read and understand internet forums.

Go for it. IMO.

please edit your title. These are things that make my blood boil. If someone is casually scanning the post and read this it implies that we did something wrong.

No worries but this happens about once a day and it really isnt fair to us.

THis wasnt brain surgery. Please find a better tech and your problems will be solved.

Maybe the wood where that particular screw goes is a bit knackered, made need a little repair work. I can't see the tech guy at the guitar shop letting it leave the store that way. My guess is that it has taken a wee while to occur.

Take it back and let the guy have a look at it. You may well screw it back together only to find the same thing happen again. At least let the guy check it for you, no point in blaming him if it aint his fault. Either way, it's no big deal and can easily sorted out.

Lovely colour btw:)

Here's my take.

You can see part of the neck bolt in the gap between the neck heel and the body pocket. I think what's happened is that the bolt hasn't gone back into it's existing thread in the body (there's no thread in the neck). Perhaps when the bolt was tensioned it tried to carved out a new thread over the existing one. In the process there may not have been enough tension on the driver to bring both surfaces together.

Safest bet is to get it to a competant luthier. If there's any damage to the thread it can be fixed.

What I do (with the neck in place) is push the bolts through the neck holes to meet the threaded holes in the body pocket. If the bolts are given a quarter turn counter-clockwise with a little downward pressure they should drop into the existing threads with a little popping noise.

 sorry. my bad.
thank you moderators...

so some here are saying its a quick fix, others say i should get a professional to do it - the thing is, the guy at the guitar store admitted he wasnt a bass tech - the bass tech didnt come in that day - he said i should come back in to get it checked over and if there are any problems, they'll do it for free...

i might try loosening the strings and see if pops back in

doesnt seem too difficult.

my concerns are what Rod Trussbroken raised - the guy actually screwed the neck in in the wrong screw threads...:(

Hey Patti, could you give me the number for your old "tech" guy again?

He said I needed to get my pickups demagnetized and rewound, cause I need more low end punch with a midscoop for my triple thumping technique. Also, he wants to put in a badass bridge so I have better intonation in 19th position.
