Do we have SR5 fans here?

Haha, the guys at church asked if I could make it sound like a bass. I couldn't hear my FOH tone but according to them it was too present *nyuk nyuk*. I asked my wife about it and she said I sounded like how I always sound like.

The last bass player had a Fender.:) Probably a root player too.

If you didn't, you could try using the mutes and see if that is more to the guys' liking.

I really like the look of that bass especially the white pickup.

That will make some of the tunes sound funny though. I'll change my EQ a bit. I always have lots of low and high mids maybe they want to hear more bottom.

Yeah I like the way this thing looks with the white/white combo. EBMM did good with this one. Too bad mint green is going to be phased out.

The sound guy probably left the settings FOH how they were for the Fender - then wondered why you cut through so much better :D the mutes and a slight EQ adjustment by you will probably do the trick, but the rest is down to the competence of the soundguy.............

Love your SR5 btw

I tried one the new Classic SR5s and it looks, feels and sounds like a great bass. The only real downside is that it retails for up to $500 more than a standard SR5.

Great looking bass. I have a Fender Hot Rod P in with black covers and it looks great. Now you've got me wondering what it would look like with white. Hmmm...

And yes, I'm a Stingray5 fan too. Mine is the 2H variety and is the best bass I've ever owned.

I used the Big AL today and the guys and gals liked it better. Ran it neck pup active with flat high/high mid and a tad of boost in the low/low mid. I also palm muted and thumbed most of the songs and played very conservatively as applicable. After all that I think it is the muted effect and sparse playing that everyone liked. I'll run the SR5 again next time with the same technique.

Okay the group's sort of mentor and I sat down after service last Sunday (he commented on how my bass was "chunky" in the mix and needed to be more "bass like"). I played strictly between the neck and the pup during the service and that's about as warm I can get with an SR5 without turning up my Markbass's EQ. In the end I told him that, well, this IS a Stingray and I chose it for the sound characteristics that he, unfortunately, doesn't like. Unless the church was willing to pony up for a BigAL/Reflex 5 or Fenderesque house instrument (and I will settle for no less than an MIA V haha) then everyone will have to live with "chunky". I can play my BigAL 4 but they'll miss those low Ds and Cs.

I also noticed for the first time that the PA had no subs. It was all full range speakers mounted in the ceilings. They sound huge when the church is empty but once the bodies file in... That was probably part of the problem too (which no bass can fix really)

You may have tried this already, but pushing the 2 band EQ up on the bass tends to flatten off the mids (they seem to boost on the 2 band as the EQ is rolled off) - along with a soft touch on the strings in the area you said should get you warm and bassy (although possibly more focussed than a P or J). May be worth adjusting the EQ on the Markbass to get the sound you need? It should be possible to get a sound which they're happy with.

Aside from the PA speaker issue, have you checked out how they EQ you on the PA? May be worth a look as this could have a bearing on it.

Turn the highs all the way off and the bass all the way up on your sr5. You won't need to move your right hand around. Turn the mids down too if you have to if you need a bassy tone and turn up your amp and make it work for a change especially if the pa doesn't have subs. You said markbass, right? I am not using my markbass 108 cab at the moment, I'll loan it to you. You will not have to worry about the lack of subs on the church pa. You have alot of tone options there, if not it's bongo time.

Did he specify peanut butter chunky or Rosie O'donnel chunky...?:D

seriously though, that stingray should be able to be EQ'd to taste in ANY room/mix... EQ tweakage should get you to where you need to be IMHO...
