this thread has been pretty interesting, like the bass player issue a while back that dealt with ruts. This thread proves that we bassists do radically different stuff to get outta ruts, and no one thing works for everyone.
some people would rather go listen to the greats, while taking a break from their instruments, while others would get down and dirty with some hardcore woodshedding. some people would take lessons and pursue academic knowledge, while others are trying to forget it all and get back to the basics. so who knows what the best approach is?
my only comment is that when my car gets stuck in a ditch, i gotta work to get it out.

I prefer to either:

a.) step on the gas until the drivetrain protests in spasms of pure agony

or

b.) step on the gas until I lurch out at full rpm crashing into the nearest object.

:D

Seriously, I know what you are saying.

What you need is a vacation in Kansas. My house to be exact. We will have your bass playing straightened out in about an hour.

The girl chasing I have to ask the wife about yet if I am to help you out. :D

i play those skinny string things too. so ill swap back and forth between the two when i hit a rut. that helps a bunch. different instrument, but still kinda similar, but different skill level and challenges.

problem is when i simultaneouslu hit a rut in both.

so i guess im saying try playing guitar sometimes. or grab your bass, a pick, blast a Rancid CD and go nuts :)

OK Maddog....ITS A HOBBY! Relax you do this to escape pressure you play for yourself who gives a rats ass how fast you are learning and all that bull....Playing is about hitting walls and then busting through them only to encounter another wall.

This weekend Luke brought Tyler up to play withluue Albert Me and Ferraro...he brought him up for Country Boy which is really hard. Tyler did fine but knew that he walked into a hornets nest. After the gig I gave luke trouble for putting Tyler in that position and I was joking of course but Tyler Said "I will learn that stuff and have it nailed next time....He could have been dejected or sad but he approached the challenge like an old pro

And to see Luke playing country licks? THAT was interesting.

Tyler's been watching his Albert Lee vids and working on his approach to country, bless that boy. He said, "When I get that down, I'll play it in public" and Ben and I both told him something like, if you wait to learn to play like Albert, you'll end up working at a gas station. I mean, what if every country picker said, 'I won't do it until I can do what Albert does?'

Nashville would be empty.

(Which might not be so bad, really.)

(I kid, I kid, many of my friends work in Nashville.)

Screw it, really. I do what I do and if I were waiting around until I could play like Ray Duke or Ben or BP or Dave LaRue, I would still be playing that ugly nasty Gibson EBO I had in 1975.

my gosh ... again i say, could i love you any more?? im going to the studio tonight to rehearse with these guys and i have been doubting any sort of ability blah blah blah we all know how that goes. anyway, Big Poppa wisdom....THAT made me feel a billion times better. i never would have dreamed i would be here a few years ago, or especially when i started and was asking arpeggi what? so i say, Bring it! im going to have fun damnit! WOO! :D

I have been playing for long time and I never could have made it this far without other interests in my life. I have other hobbies that get the focal point of my attention from time to time. Kids are a big help too, you are lucky if you even get to practice once you have them. But they are so much fun, who cares.

TIffles Im sure you did great. I think that too many times we put pressure on ourselves
on all aspects of life from looks to how well we play. If I had to live off of Rockstars sales I would be living in a trailer. Music making is therapy, its an escape and its a creative outlet and is best served without hangups or pressure
