So heres the deal. I sold my Gallien-Krueger combo to get a Gallien-Krueger 700RB. Guitar Center sells them for $599. So I go to Atlanta to GC with $590 in my pocket to pick up a new a 700RB and they didnt have one. My dealer called 2 other GC's and they didnt have one. So, I looked at a 1001RB ($749.99 sticker price) and told him I could give him $590 or nothing. He checked with his manager and told me it was my lucky day. So $590 out the door got me the brand new 1001RB. 460 watts @ 8 ohms, 700 @ 4 ohms. w00t!! Now its sitting atop my GK 410RBH waiting to be paired with a 115RBH.

Always a good bet to go into GC with cash in hand. You can wrangle some good deals. Just do it like ebmuscmanlvr83, and say, "I'll give you x out the door." They'll hem & haw, and check with their manager, but if it's within 20% (in my experience), they'll usually do it. Just pull out the cash and say, "It's all I've got, dude".

Only things they won't adjust prices on are Mesa Boogie stuff & Monster cables, or so I've heard.

Within 20%? Within 20% of what?

Within 20% of the price they tell you. Say you go to buy a Shure Guitarist wireless. They'll tell you it's $360. Pull out $300 and say, "I'll give you $300 out the door".

Worked for me

Hm... So how does that work out financially? Does an employee get a cut in his or her next paycheck to compensate for the loss of profits or has the price been inflated so much to begin with that a 20% cut really doesn't dig into profit margins?

Their profit comes from volume sales - not margin sales. Just like Wal-Mart. They buy so many of a given item that they get a bigger discount than a small business. Even when "slashing" prices like that they're still making a profit.

They'd rather "slash" the price and make a few bucks on you than none at all because you went down the street and got it on sale for $10 off :D

As for the employee, if he's working on commission then he took a pay cut technically. He'd make more on a $300 sale than he would on a $30 sale. But most people would rather make a $30 sale than none at all.

Of course, if he's on salary - then he probably doesn't give a $hit!

I think it's more likely the latter. Plus, when someone goes in and pays the price marked, that gives them more flexibility to deal with other people. They want your business, and if adjusting their price will get you to buy something there, they're willing to do it.

The sale guys at GC Atlanta get paid on commision. But you have to figure the difference in 2% of $300 or $360 isn't that great, so it really doesn't matter to them. My drummer works there so I can find out how much they actually pay for the stuff, and it is SAD what the mark-up is...

uh oh, now you guys got me hatching plots to rip off guitar center. figuratively speaking of course.

You do realize they won't sell it unless they still make money on the deal, right? I mean, a good deal for you doesn't mean a bad deal for them.

Bottom line: You'll never rip off GC. You might get a great deal, but they will always get a profit.

I'm just glad that I'm to the point where I don't even have to ask for a deal at GC. I have been dealing with the Dept Mgr for a long time now, and have bought lots of stuff from him. I just get the best deal up front.

Boy it would be nice to get to that point. It gets tiresome to go in there every time and have them do the "let me ask my manager", "I can't sell it for that, it's below our cost" routine.

i didnt mean like literally rip off. hence the "figuratively speaking of course". i meant get a good deal such as ebmuscmanlvr83. i know guitar center wont lower their price to the point where they actually loose money. from a buissness standpoint thats just stupid. i may not be einstein, but i know better than that.

ya, i made buds with a manager at the SF GC and he always gives me the "pro discount" ...

ive found that shooting the sh%t with the guys or busting out the "ive only got $X00 on me" line will also get you the deal.

That's a great deal !!!!

The GC where I live doesn't negotiate on those types of terms  . Although I did get my SR5 for $100.00 more than the SR4 that I exchanged it for, not bad I guess ;)
