iam currently playing a five string but i was wondering what thr proper guage for a 5 string tuned C G C F A would be? I've pestered alot of other players and can't get a definative answer.

you need to go with whatever guage strings feel best to you when tuned to (from the bottom up) G, D, A, E, & B. The next step is to leave them tuned to that tuning and never go back to the way you have described in your post.:D
Just Kidding! You need to buy your strings individually and not as a pack. They sell single strings, so you can chose what feels best for you. You do need to pay close attention to the nut, going back and forth between different sizes of strings can really be hard on it, so keep an eye on it.

Well, I haven't heard of a bass being tuned the way you tune yours, but a five-string bass is commonly tuned BEADG. B is the thickest, G the thinnest string. The gauges for medium gauge strings would be 50, 70, 85, 105, 135. If you drop tune your bass in CGCFA, then you might want something thicker, and you'd be better off making your own set from singles.
