I have a rough time with some Hartke amps. Gotta toy with them for a long time before I get a sound I like - and if I start messin with a parametric EQ I'm really in trouble. I usually keep the tube channel all the way down because it seems to get farty. EQs On the amp I leave flat as others have mentioned then usually just tweak the high and/or low a tiny little bit. As for switching btwn pick and fingers a drop in volume when I'm using the pick, I mean plectrum, usually does the trick. If I do make any changes they're always slight - from 1 or 2 numbers, if they had numbers. Should also note that cranking anything to 9 or 10 on my bass usually makes a mess of things unless I'm playing at real low volumes.

I also change my batteries around every 6 months, or before important shows. You'll know it's dying when it sounds like your amp is starting to crap out on you. You can usually get at least 1 set out of a dying battey once you learn to identify it's demise at the first signs. Just always have em on hand to be safe.
