I have many hobbies but consider guitars and music my profession so I treat the guitars slightly differently. I also collect watches and invertebrates (tarantulas, scorpions). Those other hobbies see more flipping than the guitar collection but I will say this. With ALL my interests that involve the acquisition of pieces to form a collection I almost always buy below market value price. I have made profits MANY times on watches and inverts and pocketed that difference if not only to reinvest in something else. Beyond that practical necessity for so many guitars I also consider most of them investments. I have only paid street price a few times in my life and that was for a piece that I consider a 'keeper'. My pink Axis is in this category. I've only lost money on guitar sale twice and every other time managed to pocket the difference. In the case of a guitar or watch that was purchased for a steal and then flipped for a profit later I consider the interim a chance to get to own and/or play the piece for free! I currently have ten MM guitars. I'm willing to bet that I could flip at least 8 of those within the next day or two for a profit. That means I took zero loss and actually gained. The concept is pretty basic really but I would have bought your translucent gold Axis for no more than $1000 the first time and probably would have offered $900. It is the most popular color in that configuration, tribute or otherwise, and doesn't command a lot as a result. There's a 1/2 Axis for sale right now for sale here that has been there a while. The market is not putting a high demand on the model but for a keen buyer you could pick a super nice, like new condition axis with a killer top for under a grand. If you were into that guitar for $900 then selling it to raise some cash wouldn't have been so difficult and you wouldn't have taken the loss. If that part of the equation were in order I'd doubt you'd have the same regret/resentment towards your guitars and your situation.

Also, not trying to preach. These aren't always investments to some people so to each their own. I drive a 13 year old honda that's paid for and wouldn't think about buying a new car for the same basic principle (although everyday driver cars always depreciate over time so it's not exactly the same).

I find these days that it's pedals that are my vice. They are cheaper and easier to flip and come in so many varieties that it's a dangerous slippery slope to walk. I know I don't need 5 high end electric guitars. I have 3 electrics and 1 of them hardly gets played. But, I can justify having 6 different od/fuzz/distortion pedals to choose from. Then there is delay, and reverb, and phaser, and flanger, and looper, and compressor, and tremolo and and and. You get the picture.

I'm nearing a point where it's much more about the playing than it is the gear.

Admitting and acknowledging what you are doing means that your problem might not be as bad as you think it is. Keep it in check......good luck!

GC doesn't always know the value of some of the high end boutique stuff- especially if its not in their regular inventory.

I picked up a DR Z cabinet at my local GC that was part of a limited edition run in none other than surf green... they had it marked for $299 and brand new start around $600... so 50% off not too bad. So i check it out a bit more 'cause it's immaculate condition. Comes to find out that it had the $100 up grade speaker...

so you can get some really good deals
