I'm really not sure why you feel the need to share your thoughts with us on this? If you just said "Yay, I'm so happy my SR5 does everything I want from a bass, I don't gas for any other bass" then fine, but for some odd reason you are attacking all of us owning more than one decent bass?

With all due respect you must have misunderstood my post. I am glorifying the one EBMM bass I've got and with that I am also singing praises to Ernie Ball for having made such a significant instrument. When I refer to those with many basses I have clearly said to you all, I take my hat to your choice and in no way that was an attack so my apologies to all those who thought it was offensive

To me one bass does it all, one woman only holds my heart, and one car takes me from a to b.

Aren't we supposed to be all differnet in our choices? Peace.

I could go clubbing every weekend and spend $100 on Red Bull cocktails and E tabs, but I don't, so that's $5200 per annum that I can spend on gear. You don't have to be rich at all to own multiple basses, just smart.

I've only got 2 now (well, 3 if you count this other "project bass" I have - a Robin). I think the most I've had at one time was 4 or 5. And I am by no means "rich". It's pretty much check to check around here right now, truth be known - saving for any extras. But at the same time, I can definitely acknowledge that I've travelled places (primarily for work) where I'd be considered "rich", and where owning one, much less multiple fine musical instruments and associated gear is a rarity for the vast majority, to say the very least. Places where people literally make practical & utilitarian household items out of things we would throw away. Makes me genuinely appreciative, and I've felt that way ever since my first trip to a place like that, years ago.

So anyway, point taken, but it's kind of "relative".

Gee, my only intention was to share my profound happiness with my only StingRay 5 with the rest of you's. You know what I wish I never did.

Everyone has viewed this in the wrong light, an affirmation is not necessarily deemed to create a debate of contrasting discussions. Hell you can have as many as you like, all well and good with me. Personally I have not yet tried one that I would want, except for the Sterling 5 which I am yet to try. Who knows maybe that would be the one, in the meantime I am content with an EB MM SR5. Best bass I've owned.

This forum is for rich people mostly?
I can also tell you that I dont assume that any of you are rich. I actually feel that most here make a big sacrifice to own the pieces they own.
.

Okay. You're probably right, it's probably more a matter of choices / priorities.

However, it's cool to see people on this forum who enjoy having their one fantastic bass

and hey... I'm here to and I still haven't owned a MM bass ;) so it must be true !

i play bass.. i like eb instruments.. they have that sound ive heard in my head and the lord knows ive been through plenty of basses tryin to make them sound like the real deal :)
it never worked, so now i try to get more of the good stuff instead to make up for lost time.. hehe

you know, its funny because ive turned into that guy that us people in music stores loves.. cant play but its not due to lack of instrument quality... heheh

if i was to be realistic i have spent waaaay to much money on eb gear, but i get a hefty reward from it so i dont complain :)

we are all different and so is our choice in basses and the amount of em. if you need only one im glad you have found the love of your life.. me, i must have been a mormon in my former life, i enjoy more than one mrs ;) :D

I knew what you meant man, and for what it's worth, i'd be perfectly happy if my SUB was my one and only bass. I think a lot of people misinterpreted you, and it's in interesting point you make. I could make do with the one bass, but variety is the spice of life, no? :)

I see it as a bit of a collection, in a way. Not in the sense that i have to have this and i have to have that, but it's just a nice (albeit expensive!) thing to collect. I also play them too, obviously. Some more than others, but they all get played :)

This forum is mostly for rich people / collector's.. mostly.

Please, please, please don't tell the IRS

I am by no way rich nor am I a collector. I play my Basses, as they were meant to be. I own 3 EBMM Basses (SR4H, Bongo 4HH, Bongo 4HHP fretless) for the different tones and dynamics I get out of each.

If I were rich I would own the following:
Stingray 4H
Stingray 4HH
Stingray 4HS
Stingray 4HP fretless
Stingray 4HSP fretless
Stingray 4HHP fretless

Sterling 4H
Sterling 4HS
Sterling 4HH
Sterling 4HP fretless
Sterling 4HSP fretless
Sterling 4HHP fretless

Bongo 4H
Bongo 4HS
Bongo 4HH
Bongo 4HP fretless
Bongo 4HSP fretless
Bongo 4HHP fretless

Not to just "Collect" them but to have a wider vocabulary and voice. The only hold back is the money :) -- that is why I am playing the lotto :D

Already told the wife ;)

I think the thing is, us 'newbies' or 'i'm-happy-with-just-one-bass' people, just are a bit um.. overwhelmed because almost everyone on this forum has got multiple/many basses (just look at their sigs:)). And we tend to generalize and maybe we try to justify our choice... hey man I'm happy with only 1 bass, aren't I???
But if I take a step back i realize almost every MM collector (or whatever you want to call it^^) is here on this forum. The regulars like us (although we often visit this forum to, can we still be called regulars?) are usually not the ones to be part of such a forum community.

:)heh

Head over to talkbass and check out how many forumites there have many basses. It's amazing.

And what is even more amazing to me: That some instruments at much higher prices than any EBMM often sell within hours or days. I'd rather have four new EBMMs than one old Fender.

So back to the question of "why?", and to give more of an answer than just "why not?":
I love basses, and to me well crafted instruments are pieces of art. Others collect statues or pictures, I collect basses. I can't explain it, and it is silly, but I truly enjoy it. I know people who collect stamps and otheres who collect cars -- I won't question either decision. The truth is that I only play one or two of them regularly in live shows, some of them I like to just grab and practise at home and the collectible ones (anniversaries) are hardly ever played at all. Still, they all are fascinating, let alone for the fact that even being the same model, each instrument has its own distinct voice.

And yes, I could be happy with one bass -- my white SR 4 HH. But I'm even more happy that I can have all the other ones by its side. I'm sure that I'll part with some of them sooner or later. But some will stay, either because they earn their position as "players" or because they simply are too special to let go.

Oli, i believe you do them great justice with the great pics i've seen you take (especially the one you use for your avatar!

I just think that anyone that can own a MM is kucky no matter how rich or poor.

I honestly think that EBMM gets all the details right when designing/producing a bass. It's an honor to own a few.

peace!

No worries mate, I'm not rich, and not a very good musician for that matter either. I do not consider myself a collector. I am a (insert adjective) Bass Player, I have 1 EBMM and love it, and play it every moment I can. I'm 47 and rediscovering what one could describe of a love for music. If it was to end today I'd have no delusions of not owning anymore. Having said that, would I like to have more, OH YEA BABY, BRING EM ON.......

I have a roof over my head, clothes on my back, food in my kitchen, and 2 Stingrays in my living room. When compared to the population of the world, I am a very wealthy and blessed man.

Capt - I share your sentiments with regard to monogamy and women. Hell, I wouldn't be here if I didn't. ;) I also relate and appreciate your love and commitment to your instrument. I probably think of mine more as children though. You can have as many as you want, they get better with age, and when a new one comes along, you love it just as much.

Great post Capt.
