I used to clean my guitars more often than playing them. Now, I don't really care much if they get all dirty and all.

You have it backwards.
Wear, dirt and aging brings out the figuring of the woods.
It makes flame or birdseye more pronounced.

Its just sinking into the topmost grain of the wood and giving the 'peaks' more contrast. Dirt and grease is not necessarily the kind of stuff you want for a pronounced woodgrain finish though.

Dougie now that shows you know all your scales and arpeggios all over the neck.lol

I buy a guitar to play it and by playing the hell out of it that is what is going to happen, though you can minimize how fast by giving it a good cleaning every 2 or 3 string changes. But it is also going to give the neck that broken in feeling like a hand in a glove that only heavy playing can do. If you look at some of the most famous guitars in history like Claptons Blackie, Becks Esquire, or SRV #1, Rory Gallaghers #1 they are practically mangled and then you have collectors out there paying ridicules prices for a replica relic which is a whole other story as I hate new guitars that have been reliced. Every ding I ever picked up smarted for awhile and I always have taken care of my gear and it baffles my mind that someone would pay 10K or more for something that looks like it was left outside for a year then tied to a bumper and dragged around the block. To each there own and I cant tell someone what to do with there money, but I also put up a post onetime on another forum about a certain famous ax made in 54, and said if a relative said your uncle wanted you to have this when he died and before you opened the case what condition would you like it to be in. Not a shock everyone said mint.lol

The bottom line is that once you acquire a few guitars a few of them are going to be your go to guitars and one will be your #1. I will be the first to admit that I have guitars that do not come out that often but I also have 3 that have not been in a case in ages and lean against the wall and may not be the prettiest but play better because they have been broken in and look it. Just like Dougies.

Maple or rosewood neck needs the same
you don't see on a rosewood neck but it's also dirty it needs the same maintenance
when i've one ,i love the maple fretboard touch even i have to be more careful with it
the most important is the pleasure to play it
my next EBMM will be with maple fretboard
and i would like that all BMM will be ordered with this option

once for all : guitar are made to be played :D

are you cleaning the wheels of your car each time you have mud on them? The moment you drive your car get dirty, same thing for a guitar the moment you play it it get worn that's a normal life process
