I miss my Bongo...

I don't even know where to begin with regards to someone saying the Bongo doesn't sound good with either pickup soloed while playing with different pickup heights....so I won't.


I've played bass for going on thirty years, and I've played Bongos for about eight years now. I never have any problem getting great sounds out of the bass with different pickup combinations, hand placement and EQ settings. Rarely have to touch the amp EQ, unless I'm accounting for something yucky in the room.

In those 8 years of a Bongo being my main bass on 100s of gigs, it never occurred to me to whip out a screwdriver to find a "new" sound.


And, I've received more comments on the looks of the Bongo from hot women at gigs than I ever did with anything else. You guys who think the Bongo is ugly go right playing the Fenders to impress the old fat guys in the audience, though.

Dont change it if you like it... when I got my new Bongo in, I DIDN"T like it compared to the Bongo I had, then I noticed the pickups were pretty radically different.. changed em & they are good. I also gave Soloing the pickups another shot & I like BOTH very much... I swear I didn't on the other bass!

BP: Keep innovating... the people that are afraid of innovation are the guys that are going to buy the "only" brand in their mind anyway, you're never going to good results catering to a crowd thats made up their mind already.

I pm'd a friend of mine on talkbass the news about me getting a Bongo again. He said: "man, those sound great, but I just can't get past the look."

Now, I have to confess that I too am not at one with the looks of the Bongo, but if I were still activley playing, I would probably get one anyway. I have played the Bongo, and the mix of tone, versatility, & playability makes it a no-brainer. Plus you cant see what it looks like when it is strapped on....

In a slightly related matter, the person I once talked to whom had the greatest objections to how the Bongo looked, played a boutique 6 string that looked not unlike a P bass, made of Bakelite, that had melted in the sun.

This is mine. I bought to sell it, because I already have fantastic bass G&L L1000 from 1982.
When I tried I was shocked how clear the sound is and how huge it is in the same time. I've had 2 Stingrays , one Sterling H, but the Bongo is form different world. Esthetically and sonically.
For God sake I need to sell G&L now, which I absolutely loved, because sadly there is no guitar that can compete with Bongo.
