I need help choosing home theater audio.

I want a home theater setup for my living room, which is medium-sized: about 15' x 23'.

My wife says I cannot have floor-standing speakers, the shrew. I want good-quality audio with the ability to crank it up now and then without distortion. Is there something out there that might fit the bill? I've been a fan of Polk Audio's stuff for years now, but I'm open to anything. Anyone know of anything they like that might fit?

Okay, upon doing some research I have decided against a dedicated home theater and am going with a stereo hi-fi setup, since I mainly listen to music anyway.

For starters, I'm going to look at an NAD C315BEE and a pair of Paradigm Studio 40 loudspeakers. There's a place in Dallas that carries this crap.

I'm going to feel free to have this discussion with myself so I don't forget what I'm supposed to be looking for.

If you were going for a home theater system, I'd say to avoid those all-in-one boxes. Just do some research and, most importantly, TEST the systems. Bring along some albums to try out with whichever speakers, as well. If the store is decent, they'd certainly allow you to do it, especially if it helps them make a sale.

The store's website that I'm thinking of patronizing seems to have customer service in mind. That uppity audiophile home-audio stuff is so pricey, I'm not surprised. Oh well, my gig's evaporated, my best friend just moved away, our Starbucks shut down and I'm sick. I'm treating myself to a toy.
