I currently have a sweet JP6 that I've been favoring as my #1 since I got it in April '06. I'm so used to/in tuned with every nuance of that guitar that I want another. I've always been kind of a Les Paul guy, always liked that heavy, chunky, block o'wood. Have had a couple, been through three Terry McInturff singlecut style guitars and kept one. It has a '57 style baseball bat neck and has always been my top choice. Not anymore, I played it last night with my band (what's left of it anyways since now there is only two of us and freakin' drum machine) and it just didn't feel right anymore for soloing. I'm no shredder by any stretch of the imagination (I tend to play sloppy penatonics and EVH type soloing) but I just felt lost without my JP in my hands. I like my TCM for good chunking and for ripping out some Pagey type riffs or other stuff you'd associate with a Les Paul and I use it as my detuned workhorse to play Sabbath stuff that's tuned down to C# but man, nothing feels more comfortable to me than my JP for everyday jamming.

I've been thinking of getting another tremolo equipped guitar, one that I can leave tuned flat to play early EVH, AIC, Hendrix, etc and have another that I'd leave normal tuned. I thought about a Wolfgang (I did, sorry, didn't get it though!!!!), maybe an Axis but you know, why not another JP baby!!!! I could leave my current JP tuned flat (which it currently is) and have a new horse in the stable ready to roll, a horse named JP.....but what JP would it be, I'm actually thinking JP7 but I'm a little apprehensive, I have a hard enough time with six strings, why go seven???!!

I like the balls you get with a ripping chord using that low B. I play in a dual guitar band that normally plays in normal tuning but I can envision mixing it up and getting more sonic landscape playing matching chords but on the low end of the world and maybe making up for the lack of a bass player right now. But should I really dump the dough on one? I briefly owned an Ibanez JEM Universe and admittedly back then, my skills weren't what they are right now, and I didn't know what the hell to do with that seventh string. I think I can make some use of it but my main fear is that my whole playing style will change when playing normal six string stuff, getting used to not being able to sloppily rip into the strings when playing chords, being very conscious of not hitting that low B and then switching back to my six strings and feeling lost.

Those who play both six and seven strings, does it just become second nature after awhile to play either one with no thought given that they are different???

If I learned a song on a 6 it may sometimes feel a bit wierd playing it on the 7. But the songs I learned on the 7 plays easy on it. So both feels comortable in their own way.

But I'ts not like you have to re-learn the 6-string songs to play them on the 7-string, a couple of playthroughs is all it takes.

7 strings give many more options for soloing over arpeggios, the options with 6 string guitars are mind blowing for me, 7 will make me drop dead on the spot.
7 is awesome for metal though :D

I still feel more comfortable just using my JP6 for certain songs. As you mentioned, the low B has to be avoided on certain songs where there's a lot of low E and A riffing, because you might hit the B with your pick. Also, string skipping from a 7-String, then switching back to a 6, you tend to go too far, sometimes .

Overall, it'll take maximum one week to get used to the majority of songs. It's all worth it for the brutality of the low B, though

set 'er up in drop A and all those B problems go away. Root - 5th - root on the top three strings and you're set to go.

Hey Pete, I saw that one on your site over the weekend, that kind of prompted me to post this thread!

I really appreciate the offer, I think I'm gonna have to take you up on it :) I'll give you a ring during the week because I'm really jonesing to get another JP and a 7 may be what the doctor ordered. If not, there's always another JP6!!!!! BTW, you guys open today?

Okay, I finally got to Beller's today and I tried the JP7 in the store with an awesome Engl Powerball half stack (man, that amp really has me GASin'!!!) and I've now got the JP for a trial period. I switched back and forth between my JP6 and the JP7 and it's a tough call. The JP7 neck is definetely going to take me a little to get used to, certain licks I'm used to doing with my ring finger is now a little bit too much of a stretch forcing me to bring my weak pinky finger into the mix. Also, if I don't think about it, I inadvertantly nail that low B when I'm digging into some low E power chords. What I am pleasantly surprised about is alot of open chord forms that I figured I would've been all screwed up with I still naturally gravitate to all of the proper strings without giving it a thought.

I'm sure that with enough time, it will feel second nature and then I fear my 6 stringers won't. Right now I can see that playing a 7 is going make me work harder and break some lazy habits which in the long run definetely isn't a bad thing, just gives me the feeling like I'm starting all over again.

An added bonus I think is bringing the low B in to play some faux bass with the fretless bass preset on my buddy's Boss GT-6. Like I said in my first post, our band has been lacking our bass player for the past few months so it's just been a dual guitar attack with no low end. If we were gigging, we'd get a replacement but since we're just getting together every couple of weeks jsut to jam and lay some stuff down in Cakewalk, I tried this fretless bass emulating preset that was in the Boss GT-6. It didn't sound half bad, tracked pretty decently with single notes. I imagine using the low B with this thing may sound pretty convincing as a bass.

So all in all I'm at the following:

1. I really need to give the JP7 alot more playtime to really decide if I want to jump into the 7 string pool. Wether I end keeping this JP7 (which by the way is gorgeous in graphite) or getting another JP6, I think my TCM Taurus Standard's days are numbered and it's going on the block.

2. I'm GASn for an Engl Powerball

3. As if we don't already know this, Pete and Nick DuBaldo are the absolute best hands down.

The JP6 & JP7 must be the nicest pair of 6 & 7 string guitars available on the market. I cannot think of a better matching set of instruments. I like having one of each because they are about as identical as can be less the extra string. Comparing them to the Jem/Universe for a moment, those two are constructed of different woods, pickups, etc. making them still a bit different in tone and playability. EBMM and Petrucci really nailed it with the JP's.

Day 2: I'm getting there, feeling more comfortable but when I'm doing some serious Metallica galloping on the low E, I'm still whacking that damn B string every now and then. I guess more time and practice and perhaps taking the idea of tuning the B down to A!

I really do love those low end chords though, wow!

See! You will get used to it 100% give or take 5-7 days. That's how long it took for me. :D :)

A JP7 and a JP6 complement each other nicely.
