Well, you know I kinda thought the Bongo was ugly too, until I held and played one. Then I really got it. Its a great feeling bass, very well balanced... and I think that has a lot to do with the shape. Now the looks don't bother me at all, in fact I kinda like it.
Its cool if you don't dig it, its not for everyone.

But the Stingray, not classic? Sorry, but you just lost some credibility there. I think, in all honesty you are far too young to understand what "classic" means.

What has me confused is... I've played in churches before... they are BOOMY CAVES. Even the small ones. I can't get enough highs and upper mids to clarify the tone. I think judging a bass by the sound you get playing in the most acoustically atrocious venue imaginable is the wrong tact to take.

Find a bass that you like, then amp and EQ it for your venue.

Stingrays just don't look classic to me. A precision looks great worn in, but a stingray is like a ferari to me. I tried a HH bongo and it had a big problem with thoes highs I talk about. I cut the highs nope still there high mids and its still there. Its just too bright for me. Im begining to think the Black LE Stingray HS with gold hardware will be perfect. Sounds GREAT through the mesa.

Bongos are great instruments. Sometimes I wish I still had mine.



But a Bongo will never be as good as a SR5 to my ears.

I'm going to vote AGAINST the Sterling as a possible MM for spencer. The ceramic PU will only add more "sizzle". Personally I'm in favor of that, but I would get a 30th or a 20th HS SR5 if I were him. As a lower-budget idea, I'd definitely recommend an HS SR4 in a nice, "classic" black/maple or SB/maple.

Also, I have to say that most of the harder-edged bands I saw at SXSW this year had MM-playing bassists, and more specifically Sterlings. I'd even go so far as to call it a trend - MM's were beating out the P's and J's!

Ok if a stingray could look classic in anyway it would have to either be black or the 30th which are freaking HOTT.

I LOVED the sound of the sterling when I got it but it was just WAYYY to growly which was AWSOME just not in the type of music I was looking at.

Is the SR5 the exact same tone as the Sterling? Because I have heard a big church band bassist use one and it sounded GREAT. So It could have just been something to do with the EQ.

I never owned a stingray 5 or any 5 string but im considering that too.

Spencer maybe you need a tube eq. I play through Electro Harmonix Tube EQ pedal and I get a wonderful tone through my solid state amp no matter what bass or guitar I play and it is not that expensive compared to buying a new bass or an amp
