Spencer, you say you don't like high-end "sizzle" , yet you claim to like the sound of "roundwounds with a pick or heavy digging" which accents the high end?
When I read your posts I get the feeling that you're a bit confused, you're going in many directions at once, you think something is "awesome" but at the same time don't really like it.
There's a lot of things you can try. Many things has been mentioned here before.
When you cut the treble there will be less highs, period. (And you don't have super human hearing)
If you play fingerstyle with a lighter touch the attack will be softer and the sound rounder compared to playing aggressively with a pick.
If you raise the action a little you have a wider dynamic range without running the risk of playing with a lot of fret noise/"buzzing".

That the Stingray is considered a classic has to do with it's design,it's history and it's success. It's a consensus.
You should probably read a little about the history of the bass before making repeated statement of the kind: "There's nothing classic about it".
Maybe you'll get it then.....

But most of all I would encourage you to :) ,relax a little, and just enjoy the music and the bass.
You know, a friend of mine had similar "problems" at one point. All it took for him was time. A couple of years was all it took. I think that might be the case here as well. ......I could be wrong though;)

The ironic thing about this is I am just about to head over to church for Chior practice.... and I am bringing my newly purchased Stingray! :)

I have only played bass in church a few times several years ago, and that was my old Rickenbacker. I sold the Rick to buy the Stingray last month.

I was kind of hoping to play my Silo Spec... but you ever try to play along with the chords for piano music. It seems like the chords they write down just never sound right. I figured I would just try playing root notes along with the piano.

We'll see how it goes.

ROTFLMAO!!!

My 16 year old son was telling me that one of his classmates was screwing around with a high frequency whistle. There were a bunch of adults present and none of them could hear it except one. She took the whistle away.

LOL

You're a cruel, cruel man!

If that was me you were referring to look at my sig.

I am old Spencer is young. We are totally on opposite ends of the spectrum.

He asked for advice yes. He also stated post one he wasn't going to listen.

He has been yanking us old guys around.

LOL I respect his choices as long as he doesn't expect me to agree. I won't.

I respect his right to disagree with me to that very same extent.

That said he must have ears like my Papillon that barks at things in the middle of the night no one else hears.

I choose to have fun rather than get mad.

My bongo isn't as ugly as I am for sure. :)

First of all I would like to say you guys are GREAT, believe me I know how I sound when I talk about things Im always on total opposites of the same subject. LOL That didn't make sense either..

Let me try to calm down and get my thoughts out in a clearer way.. This may take a while.

I ,personally, like my basses to be very versatile. I want a warm smooth tone one second, with high action and flats on it [my idea for church]. But then I also like that Tinny Precision bass sound, with rounds and a heavy attack. [Punk rock side of me]. And next I like my bass to also sound aggressive with fingers, to me that calls for light rounds with Super low action. Similar to flea's tone.

There is no one bass that can do this due to the string type, action and gauge changes.

.........I just answered my own question, the only option is to have 3 basses!

But in trying to elaborate more on what I was trying to say. When I "think something is awesome" such as the sterling tone, thats because it is a GREAT tone, the best tone I have ever heard for a bass, BY ITSELF, or at least not in the type of music I play, I'm sure it would have fit what I was trying to do with a little EQ and flats. It worked great for my other two tones, punk and aggressive finger. Only problem is I couldn't use that in the band I'm in.

I know the history of the stingray, its just my opinion that its not classic.

The Stingray HS has the H that gives that aggressive finger style that I like, and the S gives that punk Precision tone I like and it could give me the warmth Im looking for for my smooth playing. I guess if I could find a happy medium with the gauge and action it could work for all! [I don't know where this came from I was just writing why I thought the HS was the best decision and it seems like I found the bass I have been looking for.]

Also I realized I couldn't tell the diffrence between active and passive through the mesa stack. The Gk on the other hand...

Well I think I know what im getting now.. Its the closest to all three that I could find. I guess I'm gonna pick one of thoes up next and HOPEFULLY it will stay with me!

.....Ok I swear im not this weird in person.

If you are always on opposite ends of the same subject wouldn't that mean the lows are what you hear you don't like and you call them highs?

Haha, tk , great responses, man!:D

Spencer, I see you still don't get it. But nevermind, no biggie.

But seriously though, I think maybe the multiple basses route is the way to go for you. If you get a Stingray and a P-bass, two of each maybe, and set them up with different strings and action. Then you might get the versatility that you crave.

But stay away from those Hondo basses!!!;)

Can't we just discuss what colour he needs to buy as i don't think our good buddy spence is going to know what to get until its sitting around his neck!! :D

I hope that whatever you go for is indeed a great bass mate, personally I can get punk tones, smooth jazz, grooving rock, discobiscuit funk, bowel loosening slap and jaw shattering thump all on my bongo without having to change strings. a tweak here, a twiddle there (all of which have been covered on this forum!) and you're away

enjoy my freind!!!

PS. how come so many of you guys all play in Church bands, you just don't get that over here in the UK (well not where i live anyway!)

I can't imagine what kind of Church band has a EBMM player, someone explain please!!! :D

what a funny thread
