To be fair the MM site has been the same for god knows how long. Its no good having a go at the guy for wanting something different, im sure all of us would love something on our guitars/basses that the factory doesnt offer. How about a fretless maple fretboard?

NorM has it right....if the factory options don't give you exactly what you want.....find someone to change it. If you want a silhouette with Lace Sensors , dragon inlays and a USA flag paint scheme.....do it.
In the end it's just 2 pieces of wood screwed together.

I think the only option that is left out is the choice of fretboard wood for all guitars.

I hope to see optional rosewood on ALs, or vice vera, maple on SMs/JPs..;)

how about a little wager? Nobody said there were 100k of axis variations but you can order over 100k models of guitar or bass. THink about it...if I add a pickguard for stingray it creates the following:

Maple or rosewood? Fretted or fretless, unlined or lined, two band or three band, now figure that with all of the different pickguard options and then work your way around to the different colors and repeat the excercise. IT kind of creeps up on you.

How about that they are the same pickups? I know ...trust me.

How about easing into the water?

The website is out of date. Even if it was current we dont make what you desire so in your case the whining about the website is a moot point. The real fact is that Floyds are dying. Each quarter we sell fewer and fewer. Our vintage trem with the locking tuners seems to satisfy most, even Luke and Petrucci. The mass of the floyd colors the sound too. I think that you should do what NorM said.
Junior it is not rude to express your desires...if enough people do then it gets out attention

Granted this IS the EBMM forum.. and with all due respect- perhaps its the drastically out of date Musicman website... but how are there 100,000 options for an Axis?

I doubt there are 100,000 options for the entire fleet of EBMM guitars and basses. Am I missing something? Really not trying to be a jerk, I swear.

It is so hard to find anything information on anything as far as options go.

The 100,000 options thing is for the entire musicman line - I just checked, and if you count Axis and Axis SS together, there are 1,250 possible configurations, if I did the math right (based on the "Build an instrument" options). The SS has the lion's share of the options, naturally. You've got Hardtail or trem, piezo/no piezo, Humbuckers or MM90, maple or rosewood fretboard, matching/non-matching headstock, all for 25 different color options.

The 1,250 number is probably a little off, because some combinations (like a rosewood SS with a maple fretboard) aren't possible. But you get the idea. The Stingray and Stingray 5 together count for about 15,000 options, it adds up quickly.

As for your specific situation, I'd get an Axis, saw/route a slot for the 5-way (or find somebody who knows wood if you aren't handy), swap the pickups (I'm sure there's somebody around here who wouldn't mind buying the stock pickups if you aren't concerned with resale), and figure out a creative use for the 3-way switch (you could make it into a killswitch if you wanted). It's really not a big deal. But sawing that slot for the 5-way would definitely void the warranty. :)

So am I just hearing a difference in perceived output based on possibly the bridge? Or wiring?

How about easing into the water?

My apologies.

I hear ya. Although I could have expressed how I felt a little clearer... the lack of a 5 way would not prevent me from buying another axis as is. I just wish I could see what options or color updates there were... as I like tangeables. if I can see options, etc... mentally I have an easier time whipping the card out.

Besides, after all my whining... I'll probably just buy black anyways. Kinda like getting chocolate at a place with 31 flavors. ;)

Not to mention... even though you dont have some of the things I dream of... it still wouldn't hurt to update as there are dealers I click on that don't even list your product. :(

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Later!

Steve

It is one of those mathematical surprises.

100,000 roughly equals 2 raised the power of 17. That means that if you have just 17 binary choices (e.g. rosewood or maple, black or white, hardtail or trem... etc) then there are over 100,000 possible variations. If you had three choices for each option (e.g maple or rosewood or ebony, black, white or pink etc...) then you would exceed 100,000 variations for just 11 three-way choices. It's like compound interest which Einstein supposedly described as "the most powerful force in the Universe".

Steve I have both and they do sound different, but there are so many other variables invovled that those might be the difference, like the lack of a tone nob and a floyd etc...BUT I will say one thing, when I had my axis and axis supersport set up, the tech checked the pups for some reason to see if they were kosher and he did say the axis pups were hotter, NOW i dont know if he meant a decibal hotter which might be the norm between 2 pups of the same or if there was a big difference, but he showed me and the axis pups had more juice than the axis ss, they both rock though and to be honest I use the SS a helluva lot more -

The only thing that would make my Music Man more to my liking would be stainless steel frets. My stratagy is to play it continuously until it needs a refret and then go with stainless. I've got a similar plan for my JP when it gets here.
If you want to speed up that process then start playing stainless strings right now. they will chew up your frets (and fingers) right away. then when you get your stainless frets they will chew up your nickel strings pretty quick. or if you use stainless strings on your stainless frets you will see them both tear up at a surprising rate.

Does anyone think I could take my 20th and have a luthier put in a snow globe, restain it in blue and carve out some continents and stuff, change the controls to monuments like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben. Maybe one of the volume knobs could be an iceberg or something. Oh...I'm going to need some flames too.
