This is just a terrible question.

"If I could own only one bass..."

Well, I'd go sit in a corner and suck my thumb for a while, to be sure.

Lots of good suggestions, Azzy, and I can't really disagree with any of them. It's really, really hard to make a bad choice here.

Having said that, I would agree with the folks who say a dual bucker Bongo 4. My "desert island" bass is my dual hummer Bongo (a fiver, but that's just me).

I got ridiculed when I asked if my local store who deals in MM had any I could come in and play ("You think we'd let you "test" a bass like that" - my response, "Yet you expect me to shell out for one without seeing if I like the damn thing first? Sorry mate!"

Someone needs a serious @ss-kickin'.

So BP would you recommend the hs Sterling over the hh Sterling?

I have to agree with BP. Based on the types of music you listed, I think the Sterling's pickup positioning, plus the single coil, would get that swell 'english punk' esque sound, and yet still offer a ridiculous array of tonal options to fool around with.

For me pickup placement has a lot to do with it, less for sound and more for comfort. The Sterling will get you the single coil pickup, without having to say goodbye to that awesome 'Sweet Spot' position Sterlings and Rays are known for.

Hope that helps a bit.

See, now you lot have just complicated the issue :D

Needless to say Jack, I won't be using that store - I'll either order one online, or get one from you and Dude and fly over and pick it up in person :) (If I'm allowed - after all, you wouldn't actually be SHIPPING it outside of the US!) Never been to the US! And I know it's a bad question - once I get one I will want another (hell I want more than one now!) but just trying to think practically - I can only play one at once and until I am Queen of Bass  , one will suffice :D

Now I want a Sterling! I always did but the evil Bongoloids on here have brainwashed me of late :)

Jack, is it too cheeky to ask if I can have some pricing from you and Dude? I'll drop you a PM with the specs I'm interested in, provided it'll reach you :)

You lot are bad - and I think the Lush forum encourages me to spend too much money!

Arin, I'd be lying if I said that your review of the HS Sterling hadn't influenced me considerably in favour of said Sterling!

Tiffles - glad I'm not the only one who likes it! I don't get on with honey (HIWTK is really strong and sickly) but love the Jasmine stuff - are you anywhere near a store yourself?

Hey Azzy, I don't think Jack and Dude are going to like selling you a bass seeing as you are not a US resident (from what I've read in previous posts, or I would have hooked myself up by now). But if you want a good price on a used 'minty' Sterling, then I have one I am looking to sell if you are interested. It is only the single pickup model, and I am only selling because I prefer my Stingray neck and want to get another one of those to replace the Sterling I have.

Just let me know if you are interested, and if you are ever in the Birmingham area you are welcome to come and try out my Ray and Sterling for comparison, and I can even point you in the direction of a music shop with Bongos, though no new fancy pickup configurations yet. I know how you feel about playing in music shops, I tried my Sterling out before buying and my mind went totally blank and I just sat there like an idiot. I suppose I just wanted to "feel" the neck anyway, so it worked out OK. :D

LowDownDave - I would love to buy yours but finances really wouldn't permit at the moment! Plus Trev would get very jealous :) (But I'd love to see some pictures tho - no harm in fuelling the GAS)

No probs if Jack and Dude can't ship to me - no harm in asking! :D But Birmingham isn't far on the train is it, so if you have any decent shops you can recommend to me, that would be really appreciated - trying to find one I'd be happy to place an order with isn't easy - as I'm sure you know!

This place is good :D But very bad at the same time ;)

So I assume you are going the "finance" route then? Sorry don't have any photos of my Sterling here at work to fuel your GAS (and the ones I took didn't do the Candy Red colour justice in any case), but the shops in Birmingham are:

1) Sound Control

I've seen a few here in the midlands, so must be a chain. The one in Derby has a few EB basses, and the one here in Birmingham has even more, but can't remember the specifics the last time I was there. Definitely Stingray 4's and 5's, but not sure about Sterlings/Bongos, but I'm sure you could place an order through them.

2) Professional Music Technology

Bought my Sterling from here. Definitely have more EB basses than Sound Control, and they definitely have at least 1 Bongo there (last time I was in), and a nicely framed certificate stating they are some kind of "preferred" EB dealer in the UK. I'm sure you can place an order through them as well.

Strangely enough both shops have websites, but neither seem to list the fact they actually carry EB products at all (a bit of a surprise when I went in). So if you just want to place an order, I suppose you could phone them up, but if you want to take some basses for a spin, you'll have to drop in. Hope this info helps. :)

How about the Bass Centre? I bought my Stingray there a few years ago and was impressed with the service I got there.

I'm confused, you are wanting one of each... right?
Perhaps one day :D

Don't think I'll go down the finance route unless I am desperate - just want to either build up my savings or finish paying off the credit card - one of those should be soon-ish, so will hopefully be a possibility by the end of the year :)

Do you mean the Bass Centre in London? I've not been there (yet) but I've heard it's pretty good and will check them out if I ever find myself in that area. I was only telling Azzy about the places in MY 'hood. I have heard there is a Bass Centre in Birmingham, but I've yet to find it. Was difficult enough navigating around this place just to find the shops I now know about!

I was talking about the Bass Centre in Birmingham.

I think it might have changed its name to World of Guitars. Anyway, it was at
Queensway Arches in Livery Street

That's why we don't name names, or hint that said pinhead might live on the 1600 block of a famous street in a capitol city built on a swamp.

Hi,

I'd have to vote for a Natural StingRay 4-String with black pickguard and 2 Band EQ... Simply the best! ;)
Mr. Light, a man of discerning and simple classic taste, and a fine gentleman, I'm sure. That is the sole ax on the planet that says "Basser", without also saying "Lemming", when you strap it on. It says "I'm here to kickbutt and take names". It says "OK! Count it off."

So, uhhmnnn, Maple or Rosewood?
