The Super Sonic sounds like a great idea, but I was disappointed by the Fender site sound clips. Sounded like a modeling amp from here.

It's not even close. I would recommend checking this one out in person. The term modelling does not even come to mind.

$1500 for an amp?

In no particular order and no particular models, I'd be checking out products from Bad Cat, Dr Z, Fuchs, Mesa and/or Marshall. So many awesome amps, great tones and so little time.
