if you've got $1500 to spend I would stay away from the Bugera stuff and buy something of quality. You could get a mesa around that price.

I guess it depends what you are look at. If you're wanting a half stack that might be hard to come by with the Mesa unless you go used. Which might be a good idea.

What type of music do you play?

I really like Peavey amps. I've got both a 5150 and a XXX and have been very happy with them. you could get one brand new for around 1500 I think.

You might look into used stuff though, I've bought all my amps used and never had a problem.

As far as effects I would try and buy them seperate. Amps with effects built in tend to have sort of generic effects. I think you're much better off buying pedals or an effects rack to go with the amp. And this is something you can add on later after you buy a nice amp.

good luck

I'd get a little Mesa combo like an F-Series. Or...maybe, I'd look at EBay and see what kind of Mesa stuff I could get for that kind of money. Since I already have a Mesa F-30, I would take my $1500, and I'd just save up another $2500 and try to get an Egnater Mod 50.

I'll cast a vote for the Egnater as well (I just got one about a month ago...),,,,great amp.

With the power grid on the back you can drop it down to 10 watts if you want...so you don't have to completely crank it to get a good sound out of it.

I bought the 2x12 combo..but they're coming out with the Rebel 20 as well...a 20 watt head that you can dial down to 1 watt and also blend the tubes between 6l6 and El34s I believe..looks great.

If you don't want to spend that kinda cash though...I like peavey as well.

I had a Valve King 2x12 combo as well.

Here's a youtube clip of the sounds I was pulling out of it. No pedals...just a Reverend with 3 P-90s ...controlling it with the volume on the guitar.
It'll do some killer metal sounds as well...just plug in with a HB equiped guitar and you're there

I just picked up a Mesa Express 5:50 used, but very mint, for $849 (with new output tubes). There is alot of sounds in that amp - very pleased so far.

Seems like Mesa is getting an overwhelming vote. I'm going to start shopping for a used combo. I did price a Roadster head and 2x12 road king combo  was the face I made when I saw the price so that's definately out. Keep the input coming, I'm looking at every combo that has been suggested.

I'd get a used Mesa Roadster combo!!! :D Freaking rocking amp! Heavy combo though. I really like my Rectoverb combo and I got it for right at $1000. I've owned a Roadster, Mark IV, and F-30 as well. All were great amps, but the Rectoverb is the best bang for the buck IMO. The Roadster was the best of the bunch, but a bit more than I need at the moment...

A friend of mine used to have a 5:25 and it sounded great, but i'd say the 5:50 sounds even better. JP himself uses an Express 5:50 for practicing at his house... (so i've heard)

All the amps you guys have mentioned are cool..... the Bugeras are all 120 watts...dont know why anyone would need 120 w of tube power unless playing large halls, theaters, stadiums... course maybe people have insane drummers to contend with, who knows. Some folks like to have reserve headroom too though. With Bugeras I'd also wonder about quality.
With $1500 to spend ... look at Allen Amplification and his Brown Sugar Head or Old Flame Head. They're nice amps, well made, very high quality components, will last a lifetime with good care. Superb sound! There aren't any cheap components in his amps, nor are there any printed-circuit boards with cheap printed-circuit board mounted pots or tube sockets. He as combo's too, but we were limited to $1500.

Allen Amplification

BTW my handwired 65 Deluxe Reverb clone would be around $1200 if it was available for sale.

An update.....i went to the local GC and played (again) the Egnater Tourmaster 2x12 combo...sheeeeesh! Spent a little more time with it this time....even plugged a 4.23 clean line driver across the front end to see how the amp would act if you slammed the front end with a real hot signal. Man, what an amp! I played it with a used Carvin Californian (pretty nice as well, but its no EB!) tried some of the half/full power options and lower wattage settings on different channels. A great amp. The head can be had for 1400.....the combo for 1600! I don`t know how I managed to leave without it in the back of my car. One of my landmark self-control moments, I suppose.

Anyway....some other folks mentioned the Peavy Tube King Combo....that is a great suggestion. Peavey stuff is great all round for the price and is workhorse ready.

They are making a Windsor 1x12 that has tube swapping capabilities....that thing looks and sounds good for about 400 bucks!

lots of good amp options out there....just dependes on what your needs are. Ciao` fer now!

Get a wall of Line 6 amps, but make sure you are not too hungry!

i like this topic and will be looking to buy a new amp for my rig next year.i would be looking for a very versatile tube amp with an arsenal of tones to play a wide variety of music from rock/metal to pop/jazz blues etc.
i was given advice recently that the mesa roadking series 2 is a fantastic amp with the option to choose different valves to create your own tone.

anybody here use a roadking could offer some advice please?
