I’m in heaven – My Big Al is here

My new Candy Red Big All arrived tonight. Wow. It’s a knockout in so many ways I cannot believe it. First, opening the case was the first show stopper. It is stunning, just beautiful. Then I carted her downstairs for a test run in my Markbass CMD 102P. As we’ve all seen in Ed Friedland’s review, this thing is a tone-beast. It took me twenty minutes just to hear all the settings and I haven’t even begun to tweak the tone knobs. It’s the first new fretted 4 stringer I’ve bought in a while and she just screams to be played. I’m might be a bit late to the “Big Al Owners Club”, but better late than never. I’ll never give up my Rays or Bongos, but they might be getting jealous for a bit.

BP – thanks for the time and effort you and your team puts in to your gear. You make a lot of us decent bass players sound like we’re pros (and make us look mighty cool too).

Nice looking bass that Oldmanmusic - I loved it when I got to play one.

It's also a "Big welcome to the Bass faction of the ALOC".Dare I say it maybe as it's a big AL it should be the BALOC !!

Thanks everyone. I got up at 7am this morning to pound down some coffee and get back to this baby. Last night I was playing through my rig. This morning I put it through my recording board to hear it through the studio monitors. Again, the variety of tones is incredible. And they are GOOD tones too, not just different from one another. I keep coming back to a few settings, but there really isn’t a bad one in the bunch. They all have the classic MM tone that we’re all addicted to but there are some surprise tones tucked in there, especially in passive mode.

One question for you Big Al folks – when all the pickup selector switches are up, what configuration is actually active?

I thought BP said it defaulted to the front 2 pups. That way you could never accidentally turn off all 3 pups.

I believe all three up are the middle and bridge in series.

To my ears, kind of a faux humbucker sound. It's the transition setting/sound between my Big Al and Stingray.
