To my ears, none of the singe or dual combinations of the pups match the all-buttons-up tone. In the big picture, it's just another tone but curiosity has me going now...

great looking big-al you got there. I've got a question since you own multiple MM-basses.
Maybe that's a stupid one but I'm going to ask it anyway since I have never seen big-Als in Italy so I can't try them: does it have lower output compared with other MM basses with humbuckers? I'm asking this since I tend to think basses with SC have lower outputs... I really don't know why.. hope you can tell me I'm wrong since those big Als sound really cool ;) congrats by the way!

Thanks asca. The output is very similar to my Bongos, which is hotter than my Stingrays. This probably has more to do with the preamps than the SC vs HB pickups. But side by side with my Stingrays, the Big Al is louder on a pure volume comparison.

Thanks for confirming BP.

My kids have been giving my gear nicknames for a few years. For example, my Bongo 5 was dubbed "The Brick", my Dargie is "The Mean Green Machine". I asked my 10 year old son today what he thought we should name the Big Al. After watching me play it for a few minutes, he says "I think it should be Spanky". So Spanky it is!
