nice choice on the MESA! you really can't loose with a Mesa amp. their a little tweak happy, but com'on all good tube amps are!

Jimi D is dead on...the Mesas' tone controls are VERY interactive...I think I messed with my F-50 for over a month before I really got the tones I wanted, but now it sounds killer.

Some suggested settings:

For a nice crunchy but not overdriven sound on Ch 1

Gain at 3 to 5 o' clock
Pull Bright
Treble at 3 to 5 o' clock
Mids at 12 o' clock
Bass at 2 o'clock


For a med- high gain lead tone on Ch 2

Countour switched on
Gain at 2 o' clock
Treble at 2 o' clock
Mids at 12 o' clock
Bass at 12 to 2 o' clock

Those should give you some good starting points. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that tone is really subjective....go with what sounds good to you, not what everyone says you should do.

You might check out an early 70's non master vol super reverb. A nice one in VG magazine goes between 550.00 and 1000.00. point to point all tube, spring reverb, vibrato and 4 10's. Silverface fenders get ranked on, but mine sounds really nice set clean, and screams with a TS9 and a good delay in line.

Ugh, you just reminded me that I once owned a DEAD mint 73 Super Reverb that I sold when I quit playing for about 3 years. I still kick myself in the ass whenever I think about it. Incredible amp.

Scotty, a Rivera might be another option. They make really nice, all tube combos that are light weight and come in various power configurations (from 30w all the way up to 100w). Most are 2 channel, a Fender-type clean and a British-type overdrive. Right around the money you are asking.

Hey there, I'm the guy Estin wrote about and I have three amazing tube amps.
Engl sovereign 100 watt 4 channel tube amp with extra cabinet.
Fender Prosonic-Amp
Rivera Fandango 55 with 2 12" speakers

If you want all the flexibility you can get, go for the Engl, 4 channels, 2 masters and 2 reverbs and it is LOUD, from Fendrish clean to all-out megadrive.
For the more classic guitartones go for the Rivera or the Fender.

I play the Rivera all the time and I love it to death...


And yes, sometimes I play it with a Musicman too (that's why I'm here)


Wouldn't it be great to have an Amp section in this site too??

I have a Bonehead that has all the sounds you want....
and having a Luke II when i turn the amp and i turn on the guitar it seems they recognize each other and start to sing

Before you buy your next amp please at least try the new Bose system at GC. They are a little pricey right now but just take your favorite pedal board in and plug it up. The sound is amazing and your gig ready the second you walk out of the store. I'm saving up.

In the EBMM Marketing Bonanza thread I posted several pics that show the Bose system. In this picture it is the cylinder behind Keith and in front of the Guitarmgeddon sign. In this picture it is the tall cylinder on the right side of the picture from me. You can even see all the way down to the base of the unit. The same is true for this picture as well
This unit does the job of your amp, monitors and PA all in one. If you want to know how good it sounds just look at the smile on the hippie in the background of the last picture.
