I just had to change the pickups on my new EB/MM John Petrucci 6-string.

The stock Steve Special/Air Nortons just wouldn't cut it for me. They had a decent lead tone (being relatively lower output), but the rhythm sounds left much to be desired for me.

I am absolutely in love with my LP w/ EMG's. The EMG 81/85 combo definitely makes the guitar come alive, but I just couldn't deal with the LP's weight and cumbersome playing - I come to love my Music Man more and more each day.

However, I had to change those pickups. I tried different ones (I bought a set of WCR Ironmans - supposedly some of the hottest pickups on the market) - but on a whim I thought - why not those new Dimarzio D-Activators?

Definitely night and day for me. All that output was there, but with the balance and harmonics that I love from the EMG Actives, but without the batteries. It's amazing.

Now I have literally the perfect guitar - great quality and feel, and now my ideal tone.
