I have my first guitar - a strat I made in high school (made, built, finished, neck - trussrod, frets 'n all) in my office at home. It's not nearly as playable as my other guitars, but it's my baby. Having it in the office makes me feel great - every once in a while I just look at it and remember all of those years of playing.

I think you made the right call Cud ;)

I would never sell my old strat. I got it new from my mother as a high school graduation present. Even though it looks like it was run over by a tank and I don't play it anymore (or like the way it plays/sounds).

I'm awaiting delivery of my 2nd EBMM, a Luke. I've been so blown away by the last few Ernie Balls I've played that I'm already eye-balling another Petrucci and maybe an Axis or Silo.

The problem is that I'm debating wether or not I should sell my 79 Les Paul Custom to finance some of that. I bought it new when I was 14 and had a Kahler locking trem installed in the early 80's. I don't play it anymore because it's so unlike anything I like these days but it still has a ton of sentimental value.

I really don't have to sell the LP because I've got some side-work lined up that'll earn me some gear money but it seems like a waste to have it sit there.

Anyone here sell an "old friend"?

Dave

I had exactly the same conundrum.
I've had a Les Paul from new and it gigged all over with me.
Trouble is I just don't play it anymore!
I bought it new for £285 and it owes me nothing.
I wanted to buy my first 'ball and contemplated selling it! - I couldn't!
I know some people would say "why keep it if ya don't play it ?"
Just call me Mr Sentimental.

- I never had a propre Gibby case with it when I bought it - but treated it to a Gibby case of the same vintage 18 months ago - all battered and torn just like me and the guitar.

Another happy ending. Keep the LP and get a fret job on it. It will play like a different guitar.

Tim---sell tha May and go Green Balls to the wall. Amazing guitand and i will be green with NV!

Jonny

You people are making me think about selling the May!! Mmmm!

I emailed the ebay seller, and asked for some better pictures of the green. All he could give me was the crappy ones on the auction. He also has some bad feedback so I think I might give it a miss.

But now I am thinking new Morse! I just wish I could try one somewhere! Anyone in the UK have one I wonder?!

I will be in New York City in 10 days or so. Is there likely to be any stores there that would have one?

don't you have to declare it on re-entering the UK - and then pay subsiquent taxes on it?

costoms officials over here in the land of atomic monsters made me pay to bring a new axis SS back with me after I bought it while visiting family back in the states last year. apparently the reason I was given (according to my wife because I still dont' speak the language very well) is that it was over X number of dollars in value, and because of how their taxation system works - in theory - I could re-sell it here and make a profit. so I was paying taxes on the potential sale of an item that I had no interest in selling anyway... ? but american guitar prices over here are so insanly inflated I guess they have to build in safeguards against people taking advantage of their system. it wasn't that much in the way of money, so no big deal... but I had a friend who, while visiting his girlfriend's family in the states, bought a carvin of all things and had to pay some kind of duty on it when bringing it back to the UK. that was about 4ish years ago.

I *frequently* bring 'em back from the US to Canada. When asked I always say I flew out with it for a gig, jam session, etc. Never been a problem yet. If pressed I would be creative about it's value ;)

I grew up playing a strat (still have it) and I always felt my friend's les pauls were heavy to play standing up and didn't balance right sitting down.

Never took to them personally.

...course I have a $2600 PRS that I never touch either.

Seemed like a smart purchase at the time. Now it feels dumb.

I still have the strat for sentimental reasons only. I remember my mom coming with me to buy it one day when I was taking lessons at age 15.

Officially, yes is the same when you re enter the UK. That said, I travel with guitars all the time and have never been questioned about it, yet!
