Question Im wanting cream P'ups on my y2d

well im looking for a change for my y2d, and im wondering would i have to buy a whole new set of HB's & a new SC to change the color to what i want? has anyone done this before?

im going to also send my y2d to EB for a set up & fret leveling, but ill contact CS about other needs i have in mind then the forum.

Can´t wait to see it. Not heard about anybody done this, although it was discussed here now and then. I love the look of Steve´s Y2D with the cream PUPs

You could order them from Dimarzio. They offer them in just about any color you would want, including cream.

In the humbucker section, the bridge pickup is listed in the "High Power" section and the neck p/u is in the "Medium Power" section". I don't recall which model the single coil is, but you could just buy a cream bobbin cover for the existing.

yes but im really wondering, is there even anyways way to just have the color change then pay allot for a new set of pickups? but if new p'ups is the only option im still going to do it.

Full-sized humbuckers with visible coils have a permanent, molded-in color that can not be changed. Most pickups for Strat and Tele replacement have replaceable covers that come in a variety of colors available here. Most other models have non-replaceable covers."

one more thing, where can i find the single coil in cream?

so ill guess ill just buy a new set very soon and have my local guitar tech install them before i send my y2d out to EB for a fret level/setup, thanks guys!

The bobbins are coloured, so there's no way to change them. You'd need to buy a new set of p'ups.

Other option ... maybe put a vinyl covering on top of them, etc?

Looking at closer pics of the single coil . . . it's a similar deal to the humbuckers. It's a "proprietary custom wound" pickup, so I have no idea what model would be close to it.

I've heard of someone using a Duncan APS-1 or 2 as a replacement, but I have no idea if it's close to the same.

Maybe the vinyl covering would work better??

I tried to do it once, when I first purchase my Y2D. I wanted that proto Y2D look, so I ordered an extra set of creme colour Dimarzio SM HB (Bridge and neck) and bought a SC cream cover for the proposed SC I would be replacing.

The HBs are easy to replace. But the SC is tricky - the original are not your conventional SCs with a SC cover, it is one wounded with a purple bobbins (like what beej mentioned). The bobbins popper that tony recommended should solve this. There's no specific detail on the original SC used, so you gotto try get one that sound closest to it. Yours is a Floyd one, so F-spaced pups should be used.

Too afraid that the conventional SC cover wouldnt fit into the pickguard's SC slot, I drop the idea. Furthermore, to look really proto, you need creme HBs with engraved SM's signature. Anyway, would love to see one done, with a phase switch of cos!!

(Too bad I'm in Singapore, if not I would love to sell you my unused HBs with a nominal cost..)

I've read that DiMarzio has a patent on cream/cream humbuckers (strange). I've a DM Breed in cream with matching sc covers and knobs.

Jimmy, the sc covers in cream are easy to find, but the stock Silo ones require the shallow covers, not the usual deep ones. I got mine off eBay.

The problem is, the SC slot in the Y2D's clear pickguard may not allow a conventional single coil pup with a SC cover to go through(I'm not really sure bcos I have not tried) Because the original single coil pup in the Y2D is wound in way like a humbucker - with a bobbin and a cloth tape covering the coil.

Sorry, I was referring to the single coil pickup, which actually might not work with the SC on the Morse.

I did find the link to the bobbin toppers (posted above) that might solve his problem, or at least be a good temporary solution.
