They are in parallel. The Sterling or Stingray 5 will give you the option to go series, single coil, or parallel.

Thanks. Yeah, I know about the Sterling - That's what I have and I mainly use it in series, and once in a while in single/phantom coil mode. The series arrangemant has more punch to it. I wonder why they made the SR permanently in Parallel?

The reason I'm asking all this is that I'm in the process of adding a second pickup to my Sterling, and I really want to understand as much as I can about why things are the way they are.

Because that is the classic Stingray tone, and sounds best, most would say, for slap bass.

The same could be said if it was permanently wired in series. That's why I love my SR5, I can switch between all three potential wirings. I personally prefer the series setting on my SR5, but that's because I do mostly fingerstyle and I love the fat, punchy sound I get that way. There really isn't a bad sound in that bass, though.

I do wonder if it would be possible to set up the new HH SR5's or Sterlings to have series/parallel switches for when they're running both coils of the humbuckers.

My switch on the SR5 lives in Parallel. go figure. They could have done that at the factory and I would love it to pieces. They give us a choice LOL.
