Just got these two beauties in today for review! An HH 25th 5ver, and a Big Al (sunburst!).

I've been spending a little time with them at home and my first impression is:

They fuggin rawk!

I need to spend way more time with them, but I think the 25th is going to show up on my rock gig this weekend. I'm playing with Phil Brown, doing stuff from his Jimi Project CD. It's definitely a 5 string gig as the record features Jimmy Haslip, and he's living on that B string. Luckily, the B on the 25th is kicking some ass. I like the new control arrangement, it's pretty easy to switch around, not hard to grasp. I think my favorite sound so far is coils 2&3 in series. It's very open and punchy. I can definitely use that!

The Al is cool too, I love the neck. The three pickup thing is a bit of a mind bender! So many configurations... it's going to take a while to really sit with them and dial it in. I think you guys went after the "one trick pony" nay sayers with a vengence this time! All three coils is a great slap tone, very complex. But you can get any one of the pickups to do the job with the eq options.

I like how the passive and active tones are very similar (with the active set flat), they both sound great passive. And, while I was not sure whether I'd like the 4 band eq, it really works well for these basses.

So now my problem... how the hell am I supposed to get all the possible sounds on these axes into a 10 minute video? Damn.... no talking I guess.

both of those basses have so much stuff in em....It takes awhile to get used to them Im glad you noticed right off the beauty of the flat setting and level between active and passive.you can use the active for a solo switch with just a little boost

Admit it, Ed - you need a 10 minute video for the active tones, then another 10 minute video for the passive, and then... ;)

I'm waiting with bassist breath..... (I know, bad pun). Seriously, make as many videos, that are as long as you like. I will personally watch them all, multiple times. :)

Can't wait!

I don't know exactly when the videos will be out. I haven't shot them yet, and I need to see if these basses are next in line, or if something else is in front of them.

Please remember that these videos are only half of the review process... you need to go out and buy Guitar World and READ the review too. Now that I've done my "duty", I also typically post the reviews on my thebasswhisperer.com site once they are in print.

Well, I think I'm going to just have to be real quick about it. If I don't make each setting into a 20 second jam, I should be able to hit them all.... but pick, finger and slap for all settings might be pushing it. I'll be the Sham Wow dude!
