Just got these two beauties in today for review! An HH 25th 5ver, and a Big Al (sunburst!).
I've been spending a little time with them at home and my first impression is:
They fuggin rawk!
I need to spend way more time with them, but I think the 25th is going to show up on my rock gig this weekend. I'm playing with Phil Brown, doing stuff from his Jimi Project CD. It's definitely a 5 string gig as the record features Jimmy Haslip, and he's living on that B string. Luckily, the B on the 25th is kicking some ass. I like the new control arrangement, it's pretty easy to switch around, not hard to grasp. I think my favorite sound so far is coils 2&3 in series. It's very open and punchy. I can definitely use that!
The Al is cool too, I love the neck. The three pickup thing is a bit of a mind bender! So many configurations... it's going to take a while to really sit with them and dial it in. I think you guys went after the "one trick pony" nay sayers with a vengence this time! All three coils is a great slap tone, very complex. But you can get any one of the pickups to do the job with the eq options.
I like how the passive and active tones are very similar (with the active set flat), they both sound great passive. And, while I was not sure whether I'd like the 4 band eq, it really works well for these basses.
So now my problem... how the hell am I supposed to get all the possible sounds on these axes into a 10 minute video? Damn.... no talking I guess.
