Hey guys, just stumbled across this post as i was looking for anyone on the entire web who keeps in ears on their pedal board (like i do)... so as Im scanning down the thread of topics

I use the Shure PSM 200 base system and body pack, i was never happy with the earbuds they came with, I went to Alien Ears(.com) and got my custom molds from them (round $250-300) - they're people who used to work for Westone... and Ive never been happier, i will never gig or rehearse without them ever again.

Does anyone have any experience with these ?. I play in a 9 piece band. With 4 horns as well as keys as well as the usual bass and drums I am constantly getting pee'd off with being told I am too loud when I cannot hear myself through everything else going on on stage. I like to hear everybody, but with a number of loud acoustic instruments on stage, the on stage volume gets unbearable sometimes. I'm sure I make my own contribution to the problems , but whenever I am loud enough to hear myself I'm accused of being too loud. I really hate my guitar signal coming up the floor wedges as it never sounds anything like my amp. I've never tried InEars but wonder if it may be a solution fo me. I have seen some setups which are loads of money, but have seen the Trantec S4000 for under £300 which I'd be prepared to give a go. Are these things designed for monitoring vocals only or will they handle guitar competently ?

in that sort of situation i always try and have the amp cabinet a metre behind me at ear level... milk crates are my friends. ive never had any problems with volume

What walleye said.

There's a lot to be said for choosing the right cabinet, then putting your cabinet at the right height. Mine is always at ear-height, so if it's too loud, I'm gonna be the one copping it first.

Also, in regards to in-ears. I use 'em for some of the acts I work with. They're custom moulded, which I highly recommend.

- If you're a singer at all, make sure you have your mouth open when you're getting the moulds done, otherwise your moulds will loosen when you're singing.

- if you have one in-ear hanging out, that's a shortcut to damaging your hearing.

- On that note, remember that there's always the temptation to have your in-ears louder and damage your hearing, try to avoid this.

I always wondered were those in ear monitors basically like ear plugs but you can still hear the PA? I would assume it reduces the dBs significantly.

BTW, I just use ear plugs. Most of the time, we don't even get soundchecks at the dives we play, I can't see using these monitors effectively in the band I am in now.

Kev, they are the best thing since sliced bread. Everybody in your band needs them. If you have a monitor mixer you can dial in just what you want to hear. A lot of feedback problems caused by mics picking up floor wedges is eliminated. Everybody can play at lower stage volumes so the sound man will love you. Vocals and harmony will be much improved. I know it's a big investment but it is absolutely worth it.

This. And yes, don't go cheap. Especially if you gig often.

My ears have taken enough punishment searching for my sound on stage and standing next to a drummer. In-ear plugs give your ears a much needed break and only IMPROVES the dynamics and chemistry of live performance. It's really akin to sitting in a studio in that you can dial in the level of volume of each independent component in the mix that makes you the most efficient player.

If you have the financial means to do so. DOOO IIITTTTTTTTTT!

Since my last post was over a year ago, I'd like to update a bit with some good, cheap info. I'm still using the Aviom but after all of the $200-$300 custom in-ear monitors basically all broke, I started using my son's $17 Skull Candy in ear buds. I love them. They fit far better and isolate better than the big bucks ones. I found another guitarist (now in another band, but using the same system) also uses them. When the church was looking for advice on replacements, we both recommended these things. My son managed to lose mine so I splurged for another set at $17. The church bought 15 sets for what they used to pay for one.

I would like to find a cheap way to go wireless for the monitor, however. I'm already wireless on the guitar, but am tied by wire for the monitor.
