In previous thread, I rhapsodized about getting my new SR5 2008LE. Over the weekend, I "gigged'' it for the first time and WHOA!!!

As background, my gig is in Church. A predominately Black, Baptist Church. That matters because in that environment, the music sounds/looks/acts a certain way and it has certain restrictions/requirements. (If you saw "The Blues Brothers," think about the church scene. That's in the ballpark.)

Instrumentally, we're talking about a Hammond B3/Leslie, Yamaha baby grand, Guitar player (on a Strat), Full Drum Kit, second percussionist, AND a trumpet player. All of this backing up a 50-voice Choir in a church Sanctuary that seats 500 people. Yeah -- we have a big, dense sonic mix.

Yesterday was "First Sunday" so it was an extended service and we played a lot of familiar songs -- no new music. We play one particular song called "King of Glory" that is pretty much a bass-driven funk groove with a soloist being accompanied by the choir. This song completely rides the bass and it falls apart of the bass isn't driving, present and cutting.

I started with my Ray set flat but boosted the bass and the mid control about 20% above center. The tune kicks off and the groove kicks in and it was so massive that I could actually see people in the pews look at me like "Oh my Goodness. Dwayne -- what are you doing up there?!" It wasn't overly loud but the bass cut through like a knife.

As an aside, the drummer was the backup and couldn't remember the tune and frantically whispered that fact to me. I told him -- "Don't worry -- follow me and you'll remember it." 4 bars in, he was like "awww, yeah -- I'm right with you!"

The songs sounded so good it that was almost too funky for church -- I could literally see heads bobbing and shoulders moving. It was hilarious!!!

Bottom line: The Stingray 5H is (and has always been!) a BEAST and mine is a perfect example of the breed. Chalk up another win for this marvelous bass!

P.S. FWIW, everyone noticed that I had a new bass and I got lots of compliments. Some folks even noticed the new CASE! I would dearly love to supply "gig pics" buts it's kinda considered bad form to take pictures in Church so here's a picture of the bass again ...

That's cool. I would love to hear you guys sometime. The only thing, I also play bass on our worship team but um, we kind of take pics all the time either during practice before service or every now and then even during service. A lot of times, we will use the pictures to show others what to expect at our church but we are also pretty laid back as far as that stuff goes. We are a small church where everyone knows everyone.

Do you guys have any of your music on CD at all?

I've had two SR5's in the past, but don't happen to have one just at the moment. Your post makes me want to go out and get one again, soon. They are THE great all round do everything bass.

Awesome! Love that color combo with that case (not that the case really matters). You need a nice lavender suit to wear when you play that bass. Then you could play for the church of Prince with all that funk!

Thanks everyone for the kind comments -- the SR5 made QUITE an impression!

Unfortunately, not really. Here's a really poorly recorded, unmixed version of the song from a couple of years ago -- before I joined the Music Ministry. FWIW, the bass player in this clip is still our main bassist and he is a heckuva player and a great guy. Unfortunately, he's one of these old-school guys who believes that a bass should wear Flatwounds and the tone control on his (passive) bass should be dialed all the way down.

Since this was recorded, I've made the tune "mine" and I play it more syncopated/funky than this. You can also imagine just how different this sounds with an SR5.

YUP! When I first got my SR5, I was (and still am) playing in a band with drums, percussion, a piano player with a busy left hand, two guitars, singers...

A busy sound, and the SR5 great at being solid and audible in that kind of mix. And yours is a beauty!

So...you playing in Parallel or Series?

... Sequoia gold/maple...:p
Chuck -

That's the one I REALLY wanted! The Maple with the matching headstock is totally killer. It was (and still is) on the Bass Central website but unfortunately, it's long gone from their inventory. I searched all over the country to no avail and in the end, I had to go with Rosewood. I have no problem with the RW but the Maple sure is purty!!!

Aha -- the $64K question!

At home in my practice space, parallel sounds great. When I debuted it last Sunday morning however, series felt like the right play. I wasn't able to do a proper sound/level check so I went with what I knew would cut through the mix without overly cranking up my volume.
