let's think about this... the band broke up in 72 (not a moment too soon), this dude played with them in 81, the bass is an 83... and the chick wants 40K for a tour jacket and a 45??? hmmmmmm... hope it's a good bass but i don't think too much of the provenance.

L.A.? Well, maybe if L.A. were The Motor City. MC5 = Motor City 5.

MC5 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And your point is?????? what... that I didn't know MC5 = Motor City 5? I think that was self evident, but we all thank you for pointing that out.

So I didn't make it to the bonus round for the topic "old bands from before my time"?

Kidding aside...could have been a rap group for all I know.

In fairness to the alleged celebrity's widow and to the seller, neither the auction listing or the letter claim that he used this bass during his possible brief stint with an apparently reformed version of the MC5 in 1981. But, like I said, whoever the previous owners were played no influence in my purchase. The seller was clever in his wording to hype some interest in what he claims to be a celebrity owned instrument, but any bidder who knows how to use Google shouldn't have been fooled by that.

Either way the bass is nice. I really like basses that have some players wear. If it gets nicked o' well no big deal. I think they look cool a little beat up.

I saw your original add looking for a workhorse MM or possible trade for your DD. I thought about offering up my main player (92 SR trans white, which from what I've heard is a rare bird, under 25 with the rosewood board) up for partial trade. If your DD was a SR instead of a Bongo I would have made the offer. But I think you made the better deal buying the 83 as it is more vintage.

I personally love vintage stuff. So I definately would have snagged this over something new and I understand your reluctance to play your Bongo DD. I kind of feel the same way with my fretless 30th, even though mine has seen much practice time and has a few gigs under its belt.

There was a local guy that played in a very popular disco cover band that played an old SR..Man that thing sounded good.

Well, this baby finally arrived today after passing termite and biohazard inspection in Customs. I had it shipped neck-off, so I won't be able to give a full report until cleaned, assembled, strung and plugged in.

Frets are around 80%, which is how they will stay for the rest of their life once I put flats on. The chips to the clearcoat on the fingerboard edges look a lot worse than they actually are and shouldn't interfere with playing, and the back of the neck is totally unmarked. Neck looks to be nice and true, tuners are smooth, neck pocket is unmolested, and bridge saddles adjust fine.

The mute pads are long gone, and a couple of the mute thumbscrews will need some coaxing to move, and of course there is no pickguard (but I have black and tort notchless guards to choose from in my parts cupboard).

I'll post a better report once assembly etc is complete, which won't be until next week as I'm heading off in the morning for a short 4 day vacation to an island on the Great Barrier Reef.

i followed that bass on ebay...love the all white and maple look

i actually found that the foam spacers used in pro electric R/C cars for the batteries work great for the mutes and are about the same look and density as the OEM foam mutes...you can get then from a hobby store...RC10 brand seems to be the best...just putting it out there if for consideration

Great tip, thanks.

Now can anyone suggest a place to find the 2 extinct thumbscrews I am missing from my 90 SR4 mute?

Threads wander off-topic with remarkable frequency and - I'm happy to report - usually in some kind of fun and interesting way.

This wandering failed.

I'm now forced to go do some moderating and get rid of all the bickering about a subject that has absolutely zero to do with Mark's bass.

If your post count goes down, now you know why.

Yeah, that would be me...again. Sorry about that, it was way off topic.

Guess I need to start a new thread titled "bickering that will get me nowhere",

or "Music Man thumbscrews...extinct?". :p

After cleaning this one up I decided to go with a black pickguard

And, all muted up using the Rod Trussbroken recipe of double sided tape and an old mouse pad ....
